Looking to experiment with some Amarillo in an IPA. I want to keep it basic as I am not able to distinguish between a ton of different flavors yet and I also have more success with the more simple recipes. Recipe looks like this so far:

12-14lbs 2-row
1-1.5lbs crystal 20 (LBHS doesn't have 15)

1oz Magnum @ 60

Any suggestions on where to use Amarillo and what to pair with it? If all else fails, I will likely throw a ton of Amarillo at FO and more for DH.

I like 1oz at 15, 10, 5, and 2 at 0 1 oz of whole leaf Amarillo for dry hopping is killer. I have made an all Amarillo IPA before and just make an Amarillo APA. That grain bill looks killer

I also have a ton of Nelson Sauvin, Simcoe, and Citra...the more I think about it I might pair Simcoe or NS with Amarillo...any experience with these and Amarillo?

Yes. Simcoe and Amarillo 50/50 for the hop additions and add citra with them at the flame out and citra or Amarillo or both dry hop. Probably be the best IPA you ever had. Those 3 hops are my fav

any of those other hops pair well with the amarillo. i'm not a big citra fan, so i'd go with one (if not both) of the others

I wuoldnt use that much crystal. definitely keep it under 10% of the grist, preferably closer to 5% or so

I like 10% crystal and 90% pilsner for IPAs but to each their own

Yeah I like to walk that 10% line...if I go 14lbs 2 row 1 lbs crystal ill be at 7%. Im thinking about tossing some simcoe with amarillo with the above grain bill. should be exciting!

For my house IPA I use Amarillo, simcoe and ahtanum together and it's amazing!! My husband insists that I make at least 2 batches a month ImageUploadedByHome Brew1401456440.760884.jpg

I have never had them together but have had simcoe and amarillo smashes. I can imagine they would work well together. I think Citra will over power everything.

Thanks for sharing! I think i'll be brewing this sometime soon...do you keep your grain bill simple?

Yes. I use 10 lbs Maris otter 1 lb crystal 20l and 1 lb Munich. I use wyeast 1056. Simple but good!
