people are very quick to recomend the conversion thermostats. But don't they just cut the power to the motor when it gets to temperature? is that ok for the compressor to keep cycling like that being shut off mid cycle?

Would a better option be to replace the freezer's thermostat with one of a refridgerator? that way it woud cycle as normal but at the higher temperature?

How long do peoples freezers survive running the odd cycle?

How does the thermostat in the freezer work?

AFAIK, it just cuts power to the compressor and fan.
 
I had a brand new Amana 10 cu. ft. chest freezer as a fermentation chamber. It lasted 2 years in the garage (summers with 40+ days at over 100 degrees) before it crapped out and I turned it into the Coolerator.

Pretty sure it's a matter of on or off - there is no set cycle being interrupted. If it's not cold enough, the compressor is on. If it's too cold, the compressor is off. If anything, the compressor is under a lighter load, since it has been engineered to maintain a lower temp than the new thermostat is calling for.

I know the airconditioners at work say don't turn the unit on and off within three minuits or something. It seems like the compressor shuts off a short time before the fan does.

I will have to sit by my deep freeze(future kegerator) and listen to how it cycles.
 
Most replacement thermostats (Ranco, Jonhson Controls, etc.) have a differential setting that enables you to set the width of the temperature swing before the compressor cycles. This setting should be 3-5 degrees to prevent undue stress.
 
And you can (have to) also, at least on the loves, set a minimum and maximum on and off time. I just set my minimum to 0 and maximum to 99. There is also a default timing you can set it to in case the probe goes out of commission. The loves have a lot of good options.

But like everyone has said, The compressor turning on and off based off feedback from teh temperature contoller is how they work. All the thermostat is is an on/off switch based on a temperature input.
