I am not a scientist by profession, however I have never seen the word "aliquot" used in conjunction with any other words besides "wort".

Is it a common term used in the scientific community?

Yes. It's used in chemistry and biology all the time. It just means a sample from a larger volume of something. For example, "add 10 mL aliquots of the buffer solution to each of the test tubes."

It's very common in biological sciences. In fact, it's often used as a verb as well as a noun. As in:

"Aliquot reagent X and store at -20 C."

I've encountered "aliquot" in the Navy as a nuclear power plant chemist. When calibrating a certain piece of equipment, the procedure tells you to measure out 4 50 ml aliquots of chloride standard solution.
