I was looking to start a home brew club in my town! I was getting ready to put up posters and post online but was postponed because the bar owner that will let me host the brew meetings thought that I might have to have an LLC or Sole proprietorship..... Does any one know if this is needed or any other license is required?

Hmm. What's to stop a whole bunch of guys just getting together making and talking homebrew? Now if you want to do like club dues, contests and so on I could see why doing things legally would have its merits.

Our club is in our 5th year. One thing is to have a place to meet and be ready to expand. We out grew our original space and had problems finding a permanent place for a little while.

Decide what you want the club to be. Drinking? Learning. Just a get together?

It's a learn as you go thing. We are looking into insurance now.

DUES?? We collect dues but have a problem on what to do with the money LOL.

Also. You will find people will join that don't actually brew but only drink.

If you do a brew on a commercial property that could be illegal. If it were just a get together (no brewing) I doubt you need to do anything.

All state and local laws are different. If you plan to brew you may need to ask a lawyer.

Once your club is up and going, you will want to incorporate with your state, as an educational non-profit organization (or something like that) But first, you might consider getting a few folks together to form a leadership group to talk about forming a club. Meet in your homes first, perhaps, everyone brings homebrew and the host provides dinner and is reimbursed through the meeting dues.

Good luck. Our club met last night, had a great time!

Our club just started yearly dues. We have our meetings at our LHBS for now. Money from dues goes to fund public brew days. Members pick a month they want to do a public brew and sign up. The LHBS supplies half the ingrediants and club buys the other. Brewer brings in his system and brews on site. 10g batches are split and half goes home with brewer other half stays with club for meetings. Works out good .

Definitely seek to incorporate as soon as you have the three people to do so. It is major lawsuit protection. Without it someone can sue the group which means every person involved, once you incorporate someone can only sue the organization and the award cannot be higher than the money the organization has. Since alcohol is involved I would incorporate very soon.
