I brewed a coffee stout recipe this weekend that calls for 32 oz of coffee in secondary from a cold toddy... Which I do not have so I was going to use a French press and make a cold coffee and then add to secondary. Do I have to be worried about adding unboiled coffee into my secondary and adding a infection?

Thanks

In all likelihood, the alcohol content will do a pretty good job of inhibiting any potential contamination. I would just boil and chill the water you plan to use, to try to minimize the possibility.

I have done this exact process several times using filtered water, without boiling without any issue. Generally the alcohol in fermented beer will keep any issues from occurring.

I wonder... would the cold press also not strip away as much oils from the coffee grounds? I can see how that would work to your advantage both ways....

So I know this isn't a coffee forum. But can I use a French press to cold press?

Yes. Clean and sanitize the french press, boil water, chill it, add coffee grounds and put the press in your fridge. 24-48 hours later, french press and add. Don't worry about filtering again, any coffee grounds will fall out of suspension quickly.

+1. Toasted Oat Amber with a few cups of cold pressed coffee is a regular in the rotation. Never have had an issue.
