It only takes a very small bit of grain to mess with your valve when throttled back for sparging. I fought the same issues on my system until I started using a bag I bought from @wilserbrewer. Ever since, no stuck HERMS recirculation, no more trouble with grain bits interfearing with valves during sparging. Solved all my problems.
 
Awesome! The only issue now is I can only fill my tun as high as the bottom of my return plumbing. It takes a lot of malt to get that high though.
