I read a post a few days ago on another site about taking the pre-boil OG to determine efficiency since the hops change the OG????

I didn't do this as I have the Brew Pot boiling while the runnings are going in to decrease the time it takes to boil and to convert the enzymes.

However, I did take a reading while transferring to the primary and from BeerSmith and the Recipator both show an 86% efficiency.

Could someone please tell me the difference in the OG's with and without hops??

This is only my 3rd all grain batch.

My Mash PH showed about 4.6. What kind of effect will that have on the overall conversion and taste?

I don't think that there should be a difference

4.6 ? How did you measure this. I wouldn't expect you to get that high of an efficiency at that mash pH.

4.6 does seem low how did you actually check this? I always take pre boil and post boil gravity reading to determine my efficiency.

I just used the "Beer pH" color strips. They're probably not quite as accurate as one of those $50 meters.
