2nd All Grain batch and i'm freaking out.

Ok so I got an Anvil electric 10 gallon system to move to all grain. Well my first batch turned out nasty. I'm pretty sure I didn't clean well enough and it showed in the final product which was almost sour.

Well now i just mashed in for a generic porter and got all excited and for some reason threw in the hops that are supposed to go in at the start of the boil. I'm wondering how it might affect the end product. Not that I can fish them out as I just threw the pellets right into the wort.

anyone else ever do this? if so, how did it turn out?

Another strange question, can I use the pump during the boil?

Well, you've got yourself a first wort hop addition I guess. I think that will act as a 60 minute addition. The alpha acids should stay in suspension and isomerize as normal once the wort begins boiling.

I'm just not sure if the hop oils will get stuck with the grain or not. I'd just ride it out and skip whatever addition those hops were for.

Why would you want to? What's the benefit?

Agreed to the above. Drain / sparge and start boiling. Won't get what you want from the hops but won't ruin anything. Any chance you have extra hops? I.e. weren't going to use them all? Or have late additions that can be repurposed to going in early?

Also, no need to recirculate during boiling. Not advised anyhow for pumps and hoses.

As I tell my students all the time, everything has a purpose, so if you cant come up with a reason why then don't do it!

Probably too late but I'd put those late hops in early for boiling. Keeping IBU in mind of course.

if you hook the pump to a condenser, it could collect distilled water for successive batches! lol, maybe even get some more hop flavor with it!
