I have a idea and i was wondering if you guys can hear it out.

This system only requires 2 kegs. Ones your hot liquor tank/ kettle and your other is the mash tun. Once i pump my strike water over to the mash tun and after all the mashing, I was think could i be able to empty that out into a bucket/ale pale and then from there run my sparge water from my hot liquor tank to my mash tun for the second running. Then have that empty out into the bucket as well. From there i could pour/siphon/pump the wort into the kettle that was the hot liquor tank and then finish the boil there.

What do you guys think of that?

Thanks,
Bob

look into brutus 20's less transferring around it will work how you describe but like i said lots of unneeded tranfering

Hastings - this is the method that I use in my electrical system, simply because I don't really have the room right now for the 3rd keg on my stand.

I heat up my strike water in my HLT/Boiler, do an infusion mash, heat up sparge water in the HLT, drain into a 7 gallon bucket, and then add the rest of the water and dump the bucket into the HLT/boiler. Works great, less equipment...

What do you guys think of that?

Thanks,
Bob

Bob, This can easily be done. First runnings to bucket. Empty remaning sparge water from your kettle to the MT. Run second runnings to your now empty kettle and transfer first runnings from bucket to kettle as well. Sure a little primitive, but I believe it is done all the time when brewers begin AG brewing.

Just an FYI, best practice not to use your fermenter / bottling bucket for fresh wort, as the unboiled wort has a lot of lacto bugs.

Thats what I do as well. The only thing bad about it is additional wear and tear on the bottling bucket, which is minimal. It might be an extra step or two but it gives you something to do when your waiting to drain the sparge.
In fact I even do this for the sparge. It leaves a little sediment in the bucket too which is good. And I always know how much wort I am pulling out.

It seems like a great method to do when you only have 2 keggles.

Thank you guys for everything!

Bob

I'm sorry guys i got another question here,

Using this way we talked about on top, do i need to recirculate the mash?

Can i just hold the mash and then just sprinkle the sparge water and hold it for like 5 minutes and then get my second runnings.

Is that ok??

when I brew inside that is exactly how I do it. My inside pots do not have sight glasses so I have to measure the runnings in the bucket then pour them into the pot.

Do you recirculate the mash?

I'm thinking about just hold the mash and after gathering the first runnings into the bucket, then just sprinkling the sparge in there and holding it for about 5 minutes then transferring that
