I lost the lid to the bucket included in the start up kit in a move LHBS was closed so I started fermenting in plastic carboy. Bad move lol. Was that wrong?

Nope, lots of people use carboys as FVs (myself included- running a pail and a 6 gallon better bottle carboy as FVs, currently).

Some debate over which plastics are OK and which are not, that would be the questionable part if, say, you are using a generic water bottle.

Well I honestly didn't know what water to use so I got distilled water.
He meant what plastic bottle ( carboy ) you're using for fermenting.. Is it a better bottle ? if so you're good.. I use my carboy's as my Primary fermenters ( 1st fermentation ) and only use the buckets if I run out of carboys.. I just like to watch whats going on.. Just remember to keep them covered from light , just a regular old t-shirt works great..
