has anyone ever used those 10 or 20 gallon big white buckets to ferment their beer? to me they dont look air tight and i read one thing that said it doesnt need and airlock either which doesnt make sense to me. i am looking to make 10 to 15 gallon batches and i am looking for a better way to ferment than in 90 bagillion buckets and carboys with out spending 400 million bagillion on conical fermenters just yet.

An alternative you might consider is going to your lhbs and asking if they are selling the 15 gal barrel they buy the LME in. I got 2 for $10 each and they make great fermenters for 10 gal+ batches. They are food grade plastic with handles and all.
