Big fan of smaller batches! Love this thread.

Just wanted to share this sexy little conical fermenter.
Brewdemon 2 Gallon Conical Fermenter

It is actually 3.125 total volume so you could do up to 2.5g batches. Would work well for 1g batches that are too active for smaller fermenters. It is just too cute so I am ordering one. :mug:

They delivered mine yesterday afternoon, going to brew this weekend and give it a try.

Has anybody added oak chips to a fermenting bucket? The product listing for the chips specify stainless or glass, so I'm thinking the tannic acid is liable to linger in the plastic.

+1 . . . Excellent response to the "my way or the highway" big-batch argument.

Personally, if it wasn't for small-batch brewing I would not be a homebrewer. It's as simple as that.

Me too. The first few batches I did were pretty much jailhouse brew. Pretty horrible stuff, but I learned a lot doing it.

So, I'm a new brewer. A couple batches under my belt. The more I read this forum and think about it, the more I think about how much I really want to do 1 -2.5 gallon batches. The reason why is because i'd love to play around with some brews and have other beers to be able to pick up on their flavor notes so that I can develop a good enough palate for the complexities of beer. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of some websites that cater to 1 to 2.5 gallon brewers?

Thank you all very much.

Go get this book. 52 one gallon recipes with the 5 gal versions also.

I second the recommendation of the Brooklyn Brew Shop book.

In addition, I highly recommend Brew Craft, by William Bostwick and Jesse Rymill. It's all about making 1-gallon batches using the BIAB method and includes 10 basic recipes for everything from pale ale to barleywine, with a number of suggestions on how to modify each recipe. The book also contains a lot of useful info about grain, hops, yeast, adjuncts and equipment. The basic premise of the book is to get you started with AG brewing and then use the info provided to customize the basic recipes and/or make your own recipes. It's available at Amazon (click on the book title above for the link).

For me as a beginner, the coolest thing is making a new batch, not really knowing how it will turn out. Then when I crack open the first bottle I discover it tastes like beer! :ban:

So, who has some fun stuff going? Should be bottling one of the berliner wiess's I did a few months back soon (should be tonight, but I may be lazy).

Last week, I brewed a chocolate-coffee stout based on the basic stout recipe in the Beer Craft book. It's the first time I've tried customizing any recipe. Per the book, I added cocoa powder at the end of the boil. I also cold brewed the coffee in the fridge a few days beforehand, strained it through a coffee filter to remove the grounds and any oils, then put it in the fermenter and poured the wort on top of it before pitching the yeast. It's pretty murky looking, so this may be the first batch I have to rack to a secondary. We'll see what happens.

I have 4 one gallon jugs of,,,, 1 gallon of 2 Meads, 1 Apfelwein and 1 Grandmas Liquid Apple pie. What is the process to bottle? Funnel?
I've done the funnel thing. A beverage dispenser also works well, though the spigot is a little high and you need to tilt the dispenser to get all the brew out.

I have a chocolate chili pale ale going right now. Just brewed a basic pale ale with chipotle peppers and cocoa nibs. The 2 week sample tasted great

I am planning on doing a banana wine, but I want to wait until next weekend. That way the bananas can be good and overripe, and I'll have time to make a starter.

I feel like I'm whoring out my blog lately, but heres how I do it.

I'm trying to get into 1 gallon batches. I just ordered a kit from Austin homebrew supply. Your blog seems helpful so you rack from your secondary (1 gallon glass fermenter) to another glass jug before bottling? This seems ideal to get rid of that sediment on the bottom of your bottles. Where can I get my hands on some more of the glass jugs for cheap?

The apple juice sold at Whole Foods comes in really nice 1-gallon glass bottles. You can drink the juice, ferment the juice (make a wine or hard cider) or cook with the juice. So, if you look at it that way the glass jug is essentially a freebie. ;)

I'm making a smoking hot blond right now. And I'll dry hop with chipotle peppers. Let me know how yours turn out.

Went to austin homebrew and bought a one gallon kit. Also found a site where i can pick up a few 2 gallon fermenting buckets and more one gallon carboys on the cheap. So I'll pick up enough of those to be able to brew at least once a week.
