I decided to make my own tap handles and share the project. I like the 'chalkboard' style handles but the commercial ones would look a little too crowded on my 3-tap tower. I thought I could create a set that would provide enough room for nice labeling and for little cost and effort. The materials I used included scraps of hardwood boards, dual threaded inserts, 9/16 spade drill bit, black chalkboard paint and liquid chalk.

The wood is 3/4" board stock. Cut to shape on table saw and run all edges across 1/2 round router bit. Drill the hole for the insert. The information commonly available indicates using 1/2" drill. I found 9/16" to be a better hole size for ease of seating the insert properly. The inserts are plenty snug even in a 9/16 inch hole.

I sanded the handles smooth and followed directions for applying the chalkboard paint. Then the fun part-getting artistic with the liquid chalk (OK, I'm not that artistic). Chalk doesn't come off on your fingers and easily wipes off with wet paper towel.

Awesome idea and nicely done. I love the chalkboard ones that are available but refuse to pay what they cost. Gonna have to borrow your idea. Where did you get the threaded insert? Specific for taps or hardware store buy?

Thanks for the gracious comments! I bought the inserts at morebeer but I think they are pretty easy to find on amazon and beverage factory. I've even seen them made out of stainless as well as brass. In retrospect, stainless might have been better. Screwing them into the hole requires some force and the brass ones can bend.

I like the idea, but the entire thing being chalkboard dont you find that you smudge the writing on it unless your careful where you pull?

Hi fuzzewuzze,

That's the cool thing about liquid chalk. Once it dries, no smudging. Yet it wipes off easily with a moist paper towel.

The inserts are also available at Lowe's. They're in the specialty hardware drawers.

I know this is an old thread, but there is an easy way to get these inserts in the hole. Take a piece of 3/8" threaded rod and chuck it in your drill press. Run a 3/8" nut up the rod a bit, then spin on your insert. Put your handle upside down on the drill press table (preferably in a vise), and push the quill down until the insert makes solid contact with the hole, then lock it in place. Take a box wrench and spin the nut down the rod, which will in turn spin the insert down into the hole. Once the insert "bites", all you have to do is release it from a vise, but keep the jaws there to keep the piece from free spinning. As you turn the nut down the rod, it will continue to drive the insert into the hole, but have the illusion of the handle itself climbing up. I just made 30 handles for a friend this way. Pretty easy stuff. And doing it this way, the brass ones don't bend at all.

Very nice!

I just built a collar for my keezer and painted it with the chalkboard paint. All the markers I read about may absorb into the wood. Have you had this issue with these handles?
