    Getting some beer from Germany

So a friend of mine is on vacation in Germany for the next 2 weeks. He's quite willing to bring back a few bottles of whatever I tell him to try and pick up, but therein lies my problem. I've never really been big into the German beer thing, I drink mostly my own and my local craft brewerys...

Might have messed up my bottling

So I bottled a batch of honey chocolate brown ale about a month ago, but I didn't gave a pre-measured amount of bottling sugar made up. So of course, I eyeballed it from a 2kg bag. I think I ended up on the low side. Opened one today, very faint pfft, very little carb or head. So what I'm...

    Glass coke bottles?

I've been hunting up a source of clear glass bottles, and hit on those delightfully cute little 237ml Coke bottles. Perfect size for what I want to package in them. But my question is, has anyone ever used these? Do normal crown caps seal them alright?

Can I brew something with this?

So in my brewing cupboard I have- 1kg of pale DME 2 bags of priming sugar, measured for 5g batches 1 pack lavlin ec-1118 1 pack of lavlin k1-v1116 6 oz Santiam hops This is the left overs I've picked up over the last few months here and there. What do you think HBT, if I throw it all...

    Super notty!

So 6ish weeks ago I made some Caribou slobber with stuff I bought from my LBBS, used some notty ale yeast. Simply rehydrated the packet, and pitched, nothing to fancy. 45 mins later I had to rip off the air lock and put a blow off tube on, it was going crazy. I had never seen yeast get to it...

    Carbonating in wine bottles?

So I'm going to be bottling a batch of apfelwien tomorrow, this will be my first time bottling anything but beer, and def my first time using anything other then my beer bottles. So I had some friends save me a crap ton of their wine bottles, got a bag of corks etc etc, but then it dawned on...

Will a 54 000 BTU propane burner do 5gal boils?

Topic title pretty well says it all. Snapped up a turkey fryer on clearance from Wal-Mart today for 35$. 36qt pot, 54 000 BTU. Will this be beefy enough to do full boils on 5gal batches with?

Looking to go AG, confused about a few terms.

So I'm starting to get some gear together to make the jump to AG, doing a lot of reading on the subject, but there's a few concepts that seem a bit wonky to me. For example, mash-out. I can't find a good explanation for what this means anywhere. Sometimes it seems to refer to raising the temp...

Anyone use heading compound (propylene glycol aiginate)

Was poking about in a dark corner in the back of my LHBS this afternoon, and came upon a packet labeled heading compound, claims that 1g per gallon of beer will help boost head retention of the brew. Figured hey, why not pick it up and give it a shot in my next batch. So has anyone ever used...

11:37 time to pour the last pint of 2011

As the topic says, sitting about my house by myself relaxing for the new year. Pouring off a nice tall glass of my own APA to see in 2012. I don't believe in that 2012 apocalypse hokum, but on the off chance I'm wrong, I'm going out with a homebrew in my hand :)

    Yeast/hops storage question

So as I get more and more into brewing I find myself collecting odds and ends. 3-4oz of hops, a few different packs of dry yeast, a kg of DME, that sort of stuff. So what is the proper way to store most off this? I have been keeping the hops in the freezer, yeast packs in the fridge and my...

    Question about esters.

So I brewed up some Caribou Slobber today, everything went quite well. It was a partial boil extract, and I used my fancy new immersion chiller to get the wort temp down to the cold break very fast (worth every $ I spent on it). My issue comes after I added my top up water. I misjudged the...

    It's good! Hurrah!

So a few weeks ago I made a thread asking about a large amount of trub in my bottles. Discovered that yes, I vastly jumped the gun and bottled way to soon (10 days from brew day to bottle). Well I just let them sit for a month, then crashed them for a week in fridge. I now sit proudly in...

    Caribou slobber without kit

Hey all, I want to brew up some Caribou Slobber, but it doesn't look as though they ship their kits to my location. So does anyone have a rough recipie list of what all is included in that kit? Thinking of trying to put it together using what I can find at my LHBS.

    starsan suckback

So I started an apfelwine brew yesterday, and I used starsan solution in my airlock. After checking on it today,m the fermentation is coming along great, very vigerous, but it's pulled some of the starsan foam from the airlock back into the carboy, and the foam from the apfelwine has turned the...

    Apfelwine yeast?

So I'm going to try making a batch of Edworts Apfelwine, and stoped by my LHBS earlier to grab some dextrose and the yeast. His recipie calls for Mantrachet wine yeast, but they didn't have any of that. The guy working there told me I could substitute Lalvin EC-1118, which he so conviniently had...

    Some trub in my bottles.

So I bottled up a really hoppy pale ale Thursday, and it didn't seem to go poorly at all. I didn't see much trub come through the hose or anything, but after the bottles had sat for an hour, I have what looks like very large yeast flakes settling into the bottom of the bottles. There's a good...

    Hi from Halifax

Hey all, Started homebrewing on a whim and desire to have large amounts of beer available cheaply back in Sept. Well, now I have a problem, I've been introduced to about 500 things I want to try in brewing haha. Have my first ever brew, a porter in bottles, and drinking now, and my 2nd a...

Should I have maybe strained my wort?

Hi all, I made a really hoppy pale ale yesterday. 3 rather big hop additions throughout the boil. I didn't bother straining the wort before topping it up with water, and just tossed it into the carboy and let it go to work. Fermentation is coming along very nicely, but I have like, a hops...

Kit instructions seem different from all advice?

Hi guys, I started brewing a few months ago with extract kits, have a pair of porters under my belt and just racked a pale ale into secondary earlier tonight. In the intrest of learning more about the hobby, I've been reading a ton of reading on this forum and a few other spots. One thing I...
