    What are you drinking now?

My first bottle of Lagunitas IPA. I think it's a bad sixer as there's virtually no hop flavor at all...bummer, man.

    Craigtube

In regards to the extract-only aspect, I think he's stated a few times in his vids that he does it more to combat the high prices of alcohol in Canada as opposed to a devotion to the hobby. Arguably going AG would be even cheaper but you'd still need the initial investment in equipment as well...

What's the problem with my belgian wheat?

Did you measure FG before bottling? Also maybe give the beer another week or two to make sure all the bottling sugar is consumed. Cane sugar can take a little bit longer than corn sugar to be consumed if I remember right because the yeast have to go through an extra step to convert it.

The barleywine I fell in love with

I'll second Bigfoot barleywine. I couldn't stand the hot, sickly sweet taste of the barleywines I've had before, but that beer definitely changed my opinion about the style. And I probably never would have tried it if it weren't for all the praise it gets on here. I'll have to keep an eye out...

American Porter Green Mountain Porter (AG)

Just brewed this up today. Scaled it to a 3gal BIAB; OG came in a tad low at 1.057 but otherwise brew day went well. Smelled and tasted fantastic going into the fermenter, so I'm very excited for this one! I'll make sure to update with some more details and tasting notes when it's ready. I'm...

    concrete fermenters??

Well it definitely gets points for style! After a short bit of searching online I'd say it appears to have some potential, and also some potential downsides. The main thing, as someone in this thread already stated, is that it is semi-permeable to oxygen which might be good for initial...

My first all grain brew, BIAB method, with pics...

Very nice. Thanks for sharing, I always enjoy seeing other people's brewing processes. It helps get me through all those brewless days! Although I am jealous of that kettle, and also that you can get Surly beers. Always wanted to try one, guess I'll just have to settle for a NB kit. Cheers!

    BIAB Temp Control

+1, very resourceful solution. :mug: I would try it if I could, unfortunately in my case a 16qt pot is the biggest thing I have right now. I only do three gallon batches so maintaining temps is even trickier with the smaller volume. My workaround is slightly similar to yours, which has been...

brew day gravity readings and next day readings

Wait...only? Was the sample taken before of after pitching the yeast? If after, then it's probably as earwig says; if before and you're wondering why it's now reading 1.030 then chances are some wild yeast or bacteria got into the open wort and started fermenting it.

S Type Airlock - cap question

Um...these red caps do come with HOLES right? Because that would certainly be ridiculous if they didn't. My S-lock cap has a bunch of holes in it about the diameter of a sewing needle to allow gas to vent, I don't think there's ever been an issue where it was allowing pressure to build up. I...

Poll: How do people aerate their wort?

I ferment in buckets, so I lay a mesh strainer over the top and pour the wort through it from about chest height. When I do extract kits I do the same thing and also top off with the sink's spray hose. Usually creates a HUGE amount of foam on the top, plus the yeasties like it and usually take...

I want to start brewing again...

Northern Brewer has some great kits IMO and makes it very easy to sort by what you're looking for in a beer. As for reference sites, John Palmer's How To Brew website is pretty much indispensable. There is some dated information, which is corrected in his book, but it's still a great place to...

Euthanized three gallons of beer. Having a pity party.

You have my deepest condolences...good thing getting a new beer makes the passing of the old one less depressing. I'll raise a glass of my own nasty stout that, while not infected, tastes pretty horrible. I think I may dump the rest as I'm simply getting sick of drinking it.

How to reuse twist off bottles ??

There seems to be a bit of debate on here about whether or not to use twist-offs; some people say they often create poor seals that leak co2/let in air and nasties while others say they've never had a problem. To be honest I've never used 'em and probably wouldn't take the chance but that's just...

Interesting little problem: spigot on primary

That's a good point, unionrdr. I've noticed that many beers don't require me to clear out the spigot before taking a reading, especially if they were strained going into the fermenter. I just mentioned it because OP seemed to be concerned it was messing with his readings and it seemed like a...

failure... hahahaha. maybe not really though

Haha, sounds like you got many of the easy-to-make mistakes out of the way in a single bottling session! That was also my first lesson: a beer while brewing doesn't hurt, but having several is when the brain starts to get fuzzy and the mistakes begin. Sounds like you didn't hurt anything too...

Interesting little problem: spigot on primary

That is an interesting idea! I have a Cooper's plastic FV with a built in bottling spigot and they recommend drawing out about half a hydro tube's worth of beer to clear out all the built up trub, dumping it, then filling it with a sample to test SG. It wastes a little bit extra, but it is an...
