23 oz of hops In one batch, turned out amazing so far!

Indeed, these are going to get used or I will give them away. After this batch is bottled I will be on assignment for at least 3 months before I get about 1 week to see the fam, then back on assignment for another 3 months. I just figured what the hell, couldn't hurt, a little soakage at the...

23 oz of hops In one batch, turned out amazing so far!

This was my 6th batch so far, a Black Rye Imperial IPA. OG: 1.1 and FG: 1.018. Used 8oz Choco, 8oz Choco rye, 8oz caramunich II, 8oz crystal 40L, 6.6 gold lme, 3.3 amber lme, 3.3 dark lme, as far as fermentables go. Hops were 4oz warrior spread through first 20 min of boil, 4oz centennial spread...

    my stout isnt black?

Sorry about that, spelled it wrong, it's sinamar. I bought 4oz of it from Midwest supplies and used all 4oz in the boil.

    my stout isnt black?

I had to boil up some synamar and add it to my secondary to turn my black rye ipa from brown/amber to black.

    Adding steeped grains after primary

One thing I'm still having a hard time with is being patient. I am learning slowly but surely :). The sample I did taste was awesome. The rye came out more than I thought it would, perhaps I'm just tasting the massive hop bomb that went off in my mouth lol. Ill consider skipping on the dry...

    cooling wort with ice?

Best idea would be to boil all 6 gallons, but not everyone can do that, in this case if you feel like you must use ice in the wort, which is. It necessary, ice bath or immerison cooler is just fine, I would say make sure it is clean like you say, and maybe also equally importantly make sure it...

    cooling wort with ice?

Certain risks of infection maybe but I have done it before, froze some mountain spring water, same water I used in boil as to make sure there was no added taste from the whatever water ice bags are made with.

    Adding steeped grains after primary

I initially made the mistake of pitching my yeast and fermenting with only 5 gallons of wort in my 6.5 gal Carboy. I meant to top up to 5.5 soni could have a transferable 5 gallons at bottling. It has been fermenting for a little over a week now and I took my first hydro test of 1.017, og was...

    Yeast blend by mistake

How informative lol. I get it though! Yes beer, but isn't there difference in taste, attenuation etc? I have not used s04 but from I heard it is a bit different, obviously one is an American ale yeast and one is an English ale strain. Will this affect the taste much?

Stuff that looks like an infection but maybe isnt?

When I bottled my first ipa, used 6oz of hops and dry hopped in secondary, after transferred to the bottling bucket I noticed a "oil" on top. So, quite possibly, it sounds good to me lol.

Stuff that looks like an infection but maybe isnt?

Just looks like yeast reminants to me. But I'm still a newbie! My porter looked the same way and still tastes great 6 months later.

    Yeast blend by mistake

My brew buddy brewed a batch of imperial ipa at the same time I brewed my black rye IIPA. We did this to compare the differences. Used the same amount of lme and specialty grains, obviously different combinations though. Using the same hops and hop schedule, and same yeast strain and pitch rate...

    Slower fermentation

Yeah, I figured! Oh well, mistakes happen, I had my oxygen tank sitting right next to my swamp cooler, guess I just kinda rushed things. I do take my sanitation seriously, I keep a sanitizer spray bottle on hand and keep things wet. I kept my lid over the kettle while the immersion chiller did...

    Slower fermentation

This I a five gallon batch I brewed up on Wednesday 5/23. The OG came out to be 1.098 on my extract recipe for a black rye IIPA. Fermentation began with visual signs within 12 hours, this is my 5th batch and the first one so far that didn't just take right off and rape the air lock. It's...

    Making a smoked beer?

I'm fixing to brew a extract black rye ipa using a pound of chocolate malt and half pound of chocolate rye, should be nice and roasty! Oh just found out unread that wrong, replaced smoked for roasted in my mind...

    dry hopping

I will be using 4 oz for dry hopping with my next batch, 2 oz for the first 6-7 days of secondary then throw another 2 oz in 3 days before bottling. In fact, if I could come up with a design before bottling. I would create a "Randall the enamel" system to gravity feed the beer through as it...

    Beer Snob top beer?

I'm no beer snob, I consider myself a beer geek! For me it's all about Lagunitas Hop Stoopid or Founders Double trouble! And if I can find it, Dogfish 120 or Burton Baton. Can't forget Souther Tier PumKing!
