Question: Did not decant washed yeast into starter

I tried searching for a similiar post but could not find one (which is unusual). I washed some 1272 from a previous batch and had an 8 oz jar with beer on top, yeast in the middle, and some trub below. I just made a 2L started with it, however, i wasn't really paying attention and dumbed the...

Let's get small! (or) Apartment brewing processes!

I find the hardest part about brewing in a small apartment (in NYC, doing 5 -6 gal AG batches in about 500 sq ft apartment with no patio/outside access) is finding the space to store all my bottles and equipment. That's where it's really time to get creative.

Attenuation Problems only with Dry Yeast

yeah i will make an effort to start areating the heck out of the wort. Maybe I'll give dry yeast a try again sometime and see if more areation helps.

Attenuation Problems only with Dry Yeast

I always areate the same, drop the wort from a distance and do a couple heavy stirs, maybe I could have done more.... I don't think freshness was an issue. I can't remember exactly, but it wasnt more than a few months old and had been stored correctly to the best of my knowledge. I keep...

Attenuation Problems only with Dry Yeast

Thanks guys! Yeah maybe it was just finished at 50%. I will reuse the yeast I harvested and hope for better results. I'll be using starters from now on and will stay clear from dry yeast. It's not much cheaper anymore anyway.

Attenuation Problems only with Dry Yeast

After hearing so many good things about dry yeast, I decided to try some for two of my batches. I used Nottingham for Edwort’s robust porter recipe and recently US-05 for an Ale of Three Crops Recipe and had very poor attenuation with both. The porter went from 1.064 to only 1.024 after 26 days...

First Bottle Bombs - always check Hydrometer

Thanks again for all the responses! I did notice some bottles with stress cracks and plan to throw them out. I havent tried rebottling them yet, but plan to tomorrow while brewing up an APA and will let you guys know how it goes. As far as not being fully fermented in 4 weeks; it was my first...

First Bottle Bombs - always check Hydrometer

I havent dumped them yet - I currently have about 30 or so left from the batch in my fridge. I was nervous about getting more bombs (it made a huge mess) and thought that if you bottle before fermentation was complete there is little you can do. When I try to let just a little air out, I end up...

First Bottle Bombs - always check Hydrometer

haha very true. Well I have one but decided to go by time instead of checking for a few days in a row. Thanks for the help! I was thinking of trying to save them that way too, but when I crack them open even the slightest beer starts pouring out. Pretty fast too. I even refrigerated them for 24...

First Bottle Bombs - always check Hydrometer

Hi all, Thought I would share some advice that I learned the hard way, even though it should be common sense - always check for consistent hydrometer readings before bottling. I recently brewed up Edwort's Robust Porter which was my 12th batch or so. I was leaving for the holidays for...

    Pittsburgh Bottle Shops?

Yeah there are a few, not sure of too many downtown tho...there is a newer Sharp Edge downtown (near the fishmarket, not sure exaclty where) that specializes in Belgains. They're a bar, but should have beer to go (and have a great happy hour spcial of half off all belgain drafts from like 4-6)...

First Partial Mash Receipe Question - Tripel IPA

Thank you both for the responses! I will leave the grains as is. Yes, I will be doing a full boil. I thought the amount of bittering hops sounded too short. Maybe I'll do 2 oz of Columbus at 60 and .5 oz of Saaz at 45 min (instead of Columbus), then leave the rest as is?

First Partial Mash Receipe Question - Tripel IPA

Hi All! I have been looking thruogh the forums for some time now, and finally decided to join (and ask a question that I couldn't find through searching). I am planning to do my first partial mash recipe and have found one online that I liked. I just had a question about the grains to use and...
