Help me troubleshoot my first beer? (EdWort's Haus Pale)

I'm wondering if it's a combination of things. What kind of yeast did you use for the graff? I've only really had the farty smell when I've fermented cider or anything with fruit, so I'm wondering if somehow some of that is coming through from the previous batch. Also, you said that you mashed...

    What category does this fit?

After looking over the Pale Ale description again, that does sound like the best option. I think that it's not quite different enough to throw into the 23a and the wheat character is light enough that it could slide into the Pale Ale category. Thank you both for your input!

    What category does this fit?

That sounds like a good description, however I don't believe BJCP has a style by that name. I'm leaning towards American Wheat but the wheat in my recipe is such a low percentage of the total grain bill that I'm not sure how well it qualifies.

    What category does this fit?

Hey everyone! So, I've been brewing for about a year and I've decided that I finally want to enter my beer into a local homebrewing competition to get some feedback. The one beer that a lot of friends and family are encouraging me to submit is a Citrus Wheat Pale Ale. I'm not sure exactly where...

Recipe for identifying unmarked dry malt extract

Hello everyone. I am the happy recipient of a gift of 40, 1lb bags of dry malt extract. I received them from my brother in law who has a friend who works for the railroad. He told me that his friend gets some sort of deal where he gets to pick out some bulk food items for free each month. I...

    Show Us Your Label

This is a label I made for a Russian Imperial Stout that I just bottled. It's easier to read at full resolution. The quote next to Drago says "I will crush you!".

    soda stream soda maker

Yeah, I tried it once just for fun. It foamed up like crazy and created a huge mess. I won't be trying that again.

I hate to be *that* guy, but what is going on here?

My thoughts exactly. You know I did move the carboy a few days ago when I was digging through my 'brew closet' for a few bottles I wanted to serve for New Year's Eve. But I did check on it after that and don't remember seeing anything like this floating around in there. My other thought is...

I hate to be *that* guy, but what is going on here?

Correct, that white leaf thing is not part of the bag. Like I said, it's on the bottom as well. It's a new better bottle and I washed it as thoroughly as I could and sanitized it as well. I'll see if I can get a better picture, but it's only visible from the side since it's not floating on top.

I hate to be *that* guy, but what is going on here?

So, I've been brewing for about 6 months and have done a pretty good job of not panicking when I see something new during the fermentation process. This one however, has me worried. http://i.imgur.com/LWDZC.jpg This is an IPA which has been racked to secondary and is being dry hopped (you...

Starter for Imperial Stout using washed yeast

Thanks for the reply wolverinebrewer. I harvested it on 11/19, so it's still pretty fresh. I think my problem with the Mr Malty calculator was trying to figure out what to choose for the yeast concentration and non yeast percentage. So, if I get that amount of the packed yeast from the bottom...

Starter for Imperial Stout using washed yeast

Thank you very much, this really helps me out and makes me less nervous. I've wanted to brew an RIS for quite a while, so I'm extremely excited about this beer and just want to eliminate as many areas for failure as possible.

Starter for Imperial Stout using washed yeast

Yes, I am brewing 5 gallons worth. So, 3 quarts is just under 3 liters. That's a pretty big starter isn't it? How much DME should I use in a starter that big? 1.25 cups or so?

Starter for Imperial Stout using washed yeast

Hey everyone, I know there are lots of topics on the subject of starters and washed yeast, but I this is my first experience with either of them so I want to make sure I do it right. I'm going to be making an Imperial Stout with an OG of 1.096 and am going to be using some washed yeast...

    Hey Everyone.

I grew up in Zion. Its right on the lake just below the IL / WI border. I moved to MN just over 10 years ago, but I visit my family in IL pretty often. They have since moved west to Antioch. Ive been brewing for the past 4 months or so and am completely addicted. Enjoy it!

    Hey Everyone.

You are going to love the Ferocious IPA! It's a clone of Surly's Furious, which is my absolute favorite beer and it's made by a local brewery here in Minnesota. I'm originally from IL and every time I visit family down there everyone requests that I bring them a pack of Furious. I'm going to...

    Raspberry liquid left over Q...

I actually just did this. I used this extract recipe with Wyeast 3068 instead of the dry yeast listed and then added the extract at bottling. I used 3 oz (because my wife really wanted a strong flavor) and she absolutely loves it. Personally, I think 2 oz of extract would have been better in the...

Cost of Surly Darkness / Smoke?

It's fantastic. I'm actually doing my best to come up with an extract clone recipe. Attempt #1 will be coming up shortly and I'll just keep adjusting from there. It won't be perfect but maybe it will tide me over until Darkness is released again the next year. :)

    Weissbier Simple Hefeweizen

I figured not replying would be less rude than just replying "No." I'm guessing most others felt the same way. Either way, I haven't seen one. There are quite a few all-grain Hefeweizen recipes on the site, so I would just go with one of those and adjust it to your liking.
