    Hops in the primary question

So about 2 weeks ago I picked up the Brewers Best hopnog kit, their special holiday kit this year. In the kit they gave you 3oz of "experimental" hops to do whatever you wanted. I decided I was going to continuously hop for 60 mins. Maybe my version of DFH's 60 min IPA. After I brewed an put it...

    First Ever Brew day

Spoon, some kind of sanitizer safe for food, hydrometer, thermometer, a cold beer and probably the most important thing...patience.

Seems some people are very "intense" about their brewing practices

An old school winemaker taught me how to make wine. He was very adamant about continually moving the wine once a yeast cake started. He seems to think that it "takes up space" in the secondary. Hell, he even got a little miffed when I came home with an auto-siphon. He was a firm believer in...

    Fermentation question

Im sure I wont be the only one to say this but here goes. The airlick and bubbling is not a true indication of when fermentation stops. The only way to be sure is take a reading with your hydromiter before you pitch then after about a week take another and then every other day for 3 days. If...

    First time soda making questions

So the better half wanted some birchbeer. I bought the little extract bottle. Seems easy enough. Add water sugar extract bottle and yeast. It says ale yeast champagne yeast or bread yeast (that ain't gonna happen). Questions are, sugar+yeast=alcohol. I don't really want an alcoholic...

    what brewers best kits?

I've used BB quite a bit. The Imperial IPA is delish. My betterhalf loves the tripel. I heard good things about the Imperial Blonde so its been sitting in the primary for about 2.5-3 weeks now. I didn't care to much for their Oktoberfest but everybody else loves it. Make the holiday ale and let...

    last night's commercial beer experience

SA Noble Pils is a pretty good beer. Their Imperial Double Bock ... holy hell is it awful. Its like drinking sugar. Its definately a desert beer that you can drink by the spoonful. If I had my druthers I'd just stuck to the plain 'ol Sam Adams Boston Lager. I've stayed away from their Irish Red...

Fighting the urge to dump this batch

+1 for for using it in a smoker. I had the same thing happen to me with a bottle of cherry wine. I just dumped it in the water pan and let it do its thing. Id also agree on using it for brats or good German sausage. Or you could save it for the holidays and rinse down all this pizzels(sp?)...

How much headspace is too much?

First off, forgive me if this topic is in the wrong place. I went to my LHBS and saw they had some noboil Grand Cru pretty cheap, so I made an impulse buy. The "kit" says it makes 9l, which if my conversion is right, should be about 2.5 gal. I only have 5+ gal primaries and secondaries. I...

Bigger boil of BB Holiday Ale to up IBUs?

I bottled this guy up about a week ago. It was an impulse buy. It smelled fantastic after a few weeks of sitting in the primary. Im having a hard time not tossing one or two in the fridge and sipping on an undercarbed beer. Thank goodness I have a stout and a porter lined up!

    Your favorite extract kit

My favorite so far has been Brewers Best Imperial IPA. I can't get enough of it.

    Pittsburgh Bottle Shops?

Fatheads on the southside. On the southside there are numerous bars to hit. Some people even attempt the southside crawl. Anyway, Fatheads has the mix an match 6 pack thing. Last time I was there they has some DFH World Wide Stout available. Pretty decent prices and way killer food. I love...
