Proper equipment to do it right from the beginning - 5 gallon batches

You will notice that pretty much everyone says get a 10 gallon kettle. Do it! That was the first upgrade I made.

Using refractometer to adjust boil intensity and hit target volumes.

One thing I used to find tricky was to consistently hit my target volume for the end of the boil as a slight adjustment in my burner output can have a big impact on post-boil volume. Also, it's hard to get a good volume reading while the wort is boiling. For my last few brews, I made sure I...

    Defoamers that work??

5.5 gallons in a 6 gallon better bottle. I marked the volumes myself by adding water at 0.5 gallon intervals. I always lose a little to blow off, but is the worst with my porter and Russian imperial stout. My RIS that is fermenting now is down to about 4.5 gallons and still going strong...

    Keg Lids

The kegs that I have are pin-locks that have been converted to ball-lock fittings. Two of the kegs have the pressure relief valves that don't have a manual release and I want to replace them with lids that do have a manual release. I've seen lids for sale either just as corny keg lids or...

    Defoamers that work??

I tried the Five Star silicone based defoamer. It works great in the kettle, but had no effect when I added it to the fermenter. I've seen a few other reviews saying the same thing. I know that Fermcap S is also silicone based, but is it any different or work any better? I've also seen...

    Style you will never brew?

Oyster stout. To me, that is the epitome of putting weird stuff in beer just for the sake of doing it. But, to each his own...

What I did for beer today

Dry hopped my IPA and ordered two pounds of hops (Simcoe, Centennial, Columbus, and Amarillo) and a refractometer.
