    Protecting the taps from babyzilla

Any suggestions on how I can lock/protect my keezer taps from a child? My 19 month old is almost tall enough and reach them and, well, she's in to everything so I know it's just a matter of time before the dumps 5 gallons of home brew out on to the floor one of these days.

Seeking advice on extract pumpkin ale

Hi all, I got the Pumpkin Ale kit from AHS. I meant to order the partial mash kit but I must have messed up because it came yesterday and I accidentally ordered the extract kit. I have some canned pumpkin that I was going to mash with my grains, but since I'm going to be doing extract instead...

    One year later

Hi all, I wanted to come here and show my appreciation for this site and it's community. When I first started brewing as a "full time hobby" about a year ago this site was invaluable to me. I had A LOT of questions and I only needed one place to find the answer, this site. If I couldn't...

    Leaky 525SS

Hey guys, I have a perlick 525ss that keeps leaking. It was fine for months but lately it has been a pain. It is not leaking from the spout itself. It leaks from the top screw on piece up near the handle. I've broken it down several times, cleaned it and put it back together and that fixes it...

    Winter fermenting

Well, this is my first winter as a brewer and my first winter in our new house, so I'm still trying to figure out where I am going to do my fermenting. It's going to be somewhere between 0-30F here for a few months before I know it. There was a good frost this morning. I've been fermenting in...

    Fruit flavoring in keg

I have a wheat beer that was in primary for 3 weeks and now it is in the keg. At kegging time, I added 2oz of blueberry extract/syrup flavoring. I did a blueberry wheat previous to this with the same batch of blueberry flavoring, but I bottled it. I added about 1.5oz to that and I found...

Why 1/2 the priming sugar in keg?

I've been reading about naturally carbing a keg and everyone says to use half the priming sugar that you would if you were bottling the batch. Why is this? You would think that if you are carbonating the same volume of beer it would require the same amount of sugar.

    Force carbing is slooooow...

I've had an IPA and Hefe in kegs for 10 days now. These are the first two batches I have ever kegged. They have been at 12psi and 40F the entire time. When I make a pour, I get about an inch of head that has very little retention. There are some tiny bubbles in suspension but nothing special...

    Newbie kegging question

I got my kegs in from keg connection on Friday. I had an IPA and a hefe that had been in primary for a month and was patiently waiting for the kegs to arrive. They came pressurized and looked nice and clean inside. I ran hot soapy water and then starsan through using a picnic tap, then racked in...

    Pricing help

since I'm new to all this terminology, can anyone tell me what the catch is here? http://www.beveragefactory.com/EB525SSSHANK4___28302.shtml The pic obviously looks like it comes with the faucet? Does it? They list it up above, but then down under the Features tab it isn't listed...confused...

    My keezer build

I picked up a Holiday chest freezer from Lowe's, the 5 cubic feet model. This will be big enough to hold 3 cornie kegs and the CO2 tank, or possibly 4 cornies if you mount the CO2 outside. Here it is brand new. First, I took the lid off. For the inner collar, I measured the freezer and...

    stick-on thermomter on bucket

My stick-on is reading 68-70, both boxes are colored. Are the stick-ons a better reading of the wort temp of the ambient temp? I'm wondering if I should swamp cooler it, but i think I'm only a degree or two off so I'm not sure if that effort is really necessary. If your stick-on read 68-70...

    cornykeg.com kit

I've been shopping around. The LHBS has everything you need (double regulator, 5# CO2 tank, keg, etc) for $230. I'm not sure if it is a ball lock or pin lock though, forgot to check. I found that cornykeg.com has similar kits for sale for around $170. Not sure what shipping is but assuming $20...

    Pitch now or wait?

Brewing as we speak. Chilling wort now. I got the ingredients from AHS today and the chill pack with the liquid yeast was warm. It's the Wyeast "activator" so I popped the internal nutrient bag about 2 1/2 hours ago. It has not began to visibly swell yet at all. When my wort gets down to...

    Problems hitting starting gravity

My starting gravity in 70 degree wort from extract recipes is consistently low. For example, I brewed a Hefe last night and starting was supposed to be 1.058 and I came in at 1.046. However, after fermentation my final gravity is always dead on. I would assume that with an extract kit, it is...

    Campden

Three batches under my belt and I just found out that my city water has chloramine in it. I might just switch to bottled water but have been looking into campden tablets as well. When do you put the campden in the water? Should I just fill my bucket and treat the whole 5 gallons at the start...

    Transporting my brew

I've got a camping trip planned in a few weeks. By then I should have a couple batches that will be ready to drink. Normally, when going camping, you throw a bunch of beer in the cooler, haul it off and you're ready to go. How do you guys transport your bottled brew in situations like this...

    quick, improper chill?

I had a friend stop by to kill a couple hours tonight before he went to work at his 11p-7a shift. I was telling him about how I've been brewing and he wanted to try my first batch, a belgian golden, which has only been in the bottle for 10 days. I probably should have just told him it isn't...

    Dry hopping in secondary...

I just brewed my IPA last night and it's sitting down in the basement at perfect temp right now bubbling away happily. I have some hops to dry hop in secondary and I'm curious what the preferred method is here. The LHBS gave me a spare grain sock so I'm assuming that is intended to put the...

    Flavoring for my blueberry wheat

I've got a wheat ale in primary right now. I told the LHBS that I wanted to do a blueberry wheat (request from SWMBO) and he gave me a wheat ale kit and some blueberry extract/flavoring that gets mixed in just before bottling. Now that I'm approaching a week in primary, I can't decide which...
