First lager: pitching rate seems insane?!

Here is my "underpitched" pilsner.... One smack pack and pint sized starter the night before pitching.... in a twelve gallon batch.. yup that yeast just could not handle it.... And it tastes so horrible.... I think dump it... hahahahahahahahaha. This yeast replicated and more than...

you are screwing something else up then.... so you admit you don't follow Mr. Malty exactly each time?

First lager: pitching rate seems insane?!

No. I am advocating practical and cost effective brewing practices. You can purchase 8 vials of yeast at $6-$8 each or make a batch of beer before you make a batch of beer--when making massive starters--but it is not necessary. You probably buy high test gasoline too... But your car...

First lager: pitching rate seems insane?!

Hey captain know it all.... I know you and your blogging consensus have it all figured out and all... However... I know enough about yeast to know (and have been instructed by people with PHD's on the subject) that even the smartest people on the subject (yeast and fermentation) admit we only...

First lager: pitching rate seems insane?!

Pitch active starter (at desired fermentation temperature!). Aerate well. Most problems, I bet arise from pitching yeast and then cooling the wort quickly to lager temps. Shocking the yeast. less to do with under pitching. Since most homebrew is "underpitched," anyway, just aerate and...

First lager: pitching rate seems insane?!

Look. Geek out all you want. Spend your time counting yeast cells. Boring, stupid, waste of time and money. I have done enough of it (they had to pay me to do so). It is totally unnecessary and will not make better homebrew beer--> except in your mind. The homebrew shop will appreciate...

First lager: pitching rate seems insane?!

I have never put faith in those calculators for homebrewing purposes. With such low volumes of beer it is impossible to pitch "the correct" amount of yeast. Make a starter from a vial or smack pack the day before, aerate well, and pitch it.... If the vial or smack pack is older, make the...

    New RIMS system teardown

I can see how you would read it that way.... although, the wider kettles may be more efficient to heat--with direct gas fired anyway. The flame is heating a larger surface area on a wider kettle (the bottom of the kettle is larger) and, presumably, less heat is wasted going up and around the...

    5.2 buffer

As much as I trust city competence.... I would get an RO. They're $100 on ebay... You'll make better beer and help ensure safer water for you and family.

    Immersion And Herms?

Small dip tube. It is bent at 90 degrees on the end in the wort. quick disconnects make the system easy to use and take apart to clean and store. p.s. best $20 spent.. turns on and off pump with remote: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0020ML776/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20

Brewing beer in a washing machine!

No bother--it's like a cast iron skillet. This thing will past down from generation to generation, and you'll still taste the first batch! ummmm... Great Grand Pa's Dirty Laundry Ale! Still tastes great!

    5.2 buffer

Fairbanks water can be tainted with natural minerals--so much so-- it can be poison. I wouldn't drink water from a Fairbanks source that is unfiltered and not tested--let alone brew with it. Go R/O and add the some brewing salts to style. 5.2 just maintains p/h--which helps mashing--but does...

    Bought the wrong yeast

Goose Island House Ale Yeast Strain

man all I can remember is there bourbon aged stout--so good. And "Matilda"--> a Belgium Orval like beer--so good. At least three or four years ago--->the 50 barrel production facility (running 24/7 and pushing 60 barrels) uses more than one yeast. They have a nice in-house lab and full time...

    Homebrewtalk Carboy Cleaner Giveaway

I need one because easy to clean kegs are easy to fill kegs!

    Immersion And Herms?

No beers really require step mashing.... Some people prefer it for various reasons. Overly simplified--> Think of malting and mashing as one continuous process with the major end goal of turning malt starch into malt sugar that ferments into clear, tasty, brew. The maltster just takes a...

Steps to clean keg & lines with PBW

Personally, I would drain kegs and store dry. I have had pin hole leaks develop in kegs doing otherwise. Alternatively, dedicate one keg or bucket to storing the sanitizer... If it can be sacrificed. And you can monitor how long it takes for a leak to occur.

    New RIMS system teardown

The list looks good. A lot of fun. I don't see anything missing. The specifics on the rims/pid and such, you'll just have to search around and copy/modify what other guys are doing--then find the best deals to purchase what is needed. As for other stuff--i have so much damn brewing...
