Is Secondary Fermentation Still Common Practice?

I bulk age in the secondary before kegging. I find it gives a clearer brew without the use of clarifying agents, and avoids the first mug of flatelance inducing cloudy ale.

Source for sweet clover honey in Manitoba

I ran into a guy today who started an apiary last year and has expanded it this year. He's in the Interlake area and he's selling honey from his bees that feed on his clover fields. I haven't bought any honey from him so I can't comment on quality, etc. but if anyone is interested I can pass on...

    Keep slow starter?

It's a week later and no real activity. It's going down the drain. I'll pick up another pack on Tuesday for next week's brew. I need another stir bar anyway.

Oops! Well, it will be beer.

I certainly will. Slowly, over the course of a month.

Oops! Well, it will be beer.

I was making a ten gallon batch of Irish Red yesterday. First, my liquid yeast wasn't stepped up enough for pitching and then when I drained my mash into the boil kettle, there wasn't a trace of red! So, I'm looking at this very pale wort and suddenly it dawned on me. I'd forgotten to add the...

    Keep slow starter?

That's what I thought, but I wasn't sure. I'll go ahead and keep stepping it up and then save it for the next two batches.

    Keep slow starter?

I started my Wyeast British Ale II two days before my brew day. On brew day there wasn't enough activity to pitch so I just used dry yeast. The starter is moving along now so I'm wondering if I should continue stepping it up and use for my brew day in two weeks or dump it. I guess the real...

    my basement brewery (almost finished)

Looks really good! What did you use on the ceiling? Does it have to be resistant to humidity, or does your hood keep it in check well enough?

    Tips for building my room

The tiles are all on the walls now, except the south wall where the door is. That's because I still need a couple of windows before I can finish framing it, but between the French doors and the windows, there won't be much tiling. I still have to grout, but the bulk of the work is done. I've had...

    Tips for building my room

I haven't updated for a while. Most of the tiling is done. Things keep getting in the way so it's not going as fast as I like, but it hasn't stalled. The halogen light I have on when I work washes out the photo, and the little ceiling light is too dark. Anyway, it's all ceramic tiles. The...

    New PA Brewer

Some of the most fun I've had was putting a system together one piece at a time. Some I built, some I saved my pennies and bought. Welcome to the hobby and homebrewtalk. You're going to have a blast but be warned! You'll soon be almost unable to drink cheap beer (BMC -Bud, Miller, Coors).

    Tips for building my room

I have french doors for the entrance, but I'm not going to put them on until closer to the end so they don't get in the way. I'm looking for a deal on a couple of windows for either side of the door. I need a couple that are approximately 2' x 3'. If I don't find any by the time I have to...

    Tips for building my room

Thanks for your interest, eelgerg. As you can imagine, in this climate brewing is a seasonal sport unless it can be done indoors. I guess the rain in BC limits you a fair amount as well. It's slow going because work is really only happening on the weekends. I have yet to make a batch with the...

    Tips for building my room

Lots of power in the room. I have a dedicated outlet for my sewage pump, another for one of the sump pumps, the other sump pump shares with just one other outlet right next to it, four outlets on thier own circuit the west wall about a foot above where the stainless counter will go, and three on...

    Tips for building my room

I haven't gotten all the way through your thread yet, kal, but I showed the first few pictures to my wife and we agree that the room will have a windown like yours in the front. I had originally planned on building an enclosed room but I like the look of that.
