    Ballard Bitter?

Since there is another thread on Longhammer IPA, I was wondering if anyone happens to have a recipe for a Ballard Bitter clone. Anyone?

    Ancient Egyptian beer recipe?

Anyone have one or know where to find one? I'm going to have a night of weird ancient beer in over the holidays. In addition to that Phrygian/Lydian recipe from BYO a while ago, I'd like to try an Egyptian one. I've read a fair amount about Egyptian beer/brewing in scholarly literature...

    purging headspace with CO2?

Lately when I rack to the secondary, I've been purging the headspace in the newly-filled carboy with CO2. But I've never looked into this as a good/bad thing. Seems like a god idea, but what the hell do I know? Is there any ill effect from doing so? TIA

    sparge arm help

My sparge arm has developed an issue.....it no longer rotates freely, as though at one point in its rotation there is some resistance. When the water is coming out of the HLT pretty hard, it will rotate, but the little "hiccup" is still present. If I close the valve on the HLT to the setting...

converting the ol' cooler + S/S braid to a HERMS system

[tried searching...maybe I'm not getting the search terms just right] Has anyone had any sucess in converting your cool-based MLT to a HERMS system? Or do you know of a resource? I'm very happy with my beer from the system I have now, but, you know how it is....gotta tinker. I'd love to...

brass fittings in a converted cooler

I didn't even think of this till now, but... Is there any reason not to use brass fittings/pipe in a mash tun? Inside the mash tun, that is. I know, I know: SS is better...but brass pipe fittings, both smooth and rough (cast), are used for potable water lines everywhere, and I read what Palmer...

When is a 5 gal mash tun not enough?

For making AG five-gallon batches... What kind of recipes cannot be made with a 5 gal (converted cooler) mash tun? Just curious...

    wort chilling alternative?

Trying to chill a full wort boil. Currently I bury the brewpot in snow, whirlpool it, and then pack in the snow (and repack, and repack....) This last batch took 35-40 minutes to get to pitching temp. It'd be nice to speed that up. (It's too cold here to mess with hoses, but I'll start using...

    Full boil physics

Some questions for the amateur (or professional) physicists or chemists out there, a category that includes any experienced homebrewer. 1. Boil-off: Is this affected by outside (ambient) temperature and/or altitude? 2. Wort-cooling: As outside temperature decreases, does the wort-cooling...

    hitting the FG

How important is it to hit the FG of a given recipe? I've got a batch in the secondary that is now consistently reading 1.018 for four days (it's been in the secondary thirteen days). The recipe calls for an FG of 1.012. I'm inclined to leave it the secondary for another week anyway, but if...

    Sanitizing an aluminum brewpot

I've been using C-Brite to sanitize, which I'm pretty pleased with. But I've read that abrasive cleaning/cleaners should be avoided with aluminum, e.g. scouring pads. But bleach is chemically abrasive, and C-Brite does have some chlorine in it. Is C-Brite safe to use on an aluminum brewpot...

    Cheers, all

Hello from the "Last Best Place"! I'm a hombrew newb, but not a newb to good beer ;) This looks like a great forum. Thanks to all who share their experience and enthusiasm with those new to homebrewing. Even after a little lurking, I've learned a lot. Looking forward to getting to know you...
