    Sending wort to the basement

Started getting the urge to start brewing again. Amazing how little time you have after kids are born. Anyways, keezer that I use also for temp control has since been moved to the basement for more garage space. I brew in the attached garage on a gas fired herms. I'm thinking I'd like to run to...

    Barley Crusher.... JUNK!

Of all the homebrew equipment I've purchased. The Barley Crusher is the only one I regret. Time is limited and having it intermittently crushing with endless manipulation..... hobbies should be fun.... Poorly manufactered JUNK. Any recommendations on a quality grain crusher?

I think I need some kegs.

I agree, sick of my ball locks. To many places for leaks to occur. Slowly converting to sanke.... Besides fermenting in half barrel (15.5 Gallons) fits perfect in 50L (13.2 gallon). No more cleaning multiple kegs for big batches! And picnic taps become an an option if you have a gas issue.

    Herms nightmare

I just went through the same thing about a month ago! Thought I could use the 10g rubbermaid, with my newly constructed herms brew rig. Could not get flow no matter what i did, knocked the manifold off its connection inside the cooler. Got to scoop all 24 lbs of heated grain out to reset...

    Converting scaffold to brewstand

Lately I have been thinking about a brewery up grade and making a stand probably with some automation. I have access to welders however I think my brew stand may have some trial and error. I feel more comfortable screwing materials together instead of welding, in case modification may be needed...

First lager: pitching rate seems insane?!

IMO, drew does have a point. If time and money are scarce, but it is up to the brewer. I like to use Mr.Malty as a guideline. Making a starter and getting half way to where one should be is still better then not making a starter at all. If the time is available I attempt the correct pitching...

    Connecticut brewers

Saw this forum pop up again on my subscribed and would like to propose a suggestion. There is a park in Stratford, Booth Memorial. Perhaps arrange a date to meet in the spring? Grab a picnic table or two and share some brew. There is plenty of space, I know of other clubs that use the facility...

    Ferment in Carboy?

Fermenting five gallons in a five gallon carboy can be done. Just requires a blow off tube until fermentation slows. I used to do it before I got more buckets and a sanke.

Party Tap won't stop flowing! HELP!

Did you purge the keg after dropping pressure?

Party Tap won't stop flowing! HELP!

I would guess that the party tap is not holding the pressure. Force carb with it disconnected. Reconnect after you drop to dispensing pressure.

    Brewing in Basement

I have brewed in my basement multiple times with a co detector and have found higher co levels in my kitchen when using the stove. Only got up to I think 60 ppm. I still open the door periodically. It's nice not having wind affect burner and having the washing machine connections close by for...

Warning: Noob mistake to avoid at all costs

I went right back to pellets for that reason. Using whole leaf just seemed to clog everything and add more steps without any benefits.

    Erlenmeyer starter starter process tips?

I also use the paper funnel method, ussually a magazine or piece of news paper. To mix the dme I've been putting it on the stir plate before boil then move it to the heat when it looks mixed. I just started using fermcap and am impressed. It really cut down the mess.

    "Your patience will be rewarded"

It's amazing what time will do. The oatmeal stout I made a few months ago was bitter at first but really came to life after sitting in the keg for two months. I have consumed 20 year old beer my dad made. I was surprised to find it really good. Don't know what it was and he couldn't remember...

    Decoction for Hefeweizen

Depends on your equipment. I use coolers and start with a really thick mash to leave room for enough water to raise The temp to where I need it. I use beersmith to calculate the steps.

Sending a beer back to the bar...

I have the same issues with a bar down the street from where I live. Dirty taps and pressures so low the kegs are flat within days. Unfortunately the food is good or else I wouldn't return. If I get beer that's flat ill just let it stay on the bar and shoot the bar keep a nasty look until they...

How to sanitize fruit for wine

Thanks for the replies. Seems like wine making is not at all like making beer. Can I get a recommendation for a good book that explains the basics?

Beers with quick turn around times.

I usually brew a big batch of hefeweise when my pipeline runs low. I've gone from kettle to being on tap in two weeks. It's suppost to be cloudy so no need to cold crash or clear the beer.
