    Brew Boss Systems

I've owned the system for over four years now--the original system without the COFI etc. Just the brains, the wiring, and the 15 gal. brew pot. I have my own recirculation system that works well for me (not unlike the one in the picture above, but I have a cover, and with four tubes running...

    Brew Boss Systems

I recently had a probe go bad as well, with the same symptoms. I found the male plug was bad. So I cut it off, stripped the wires--a delicate job--and then attached them to a new male plug. You have to make sure to attach the wires to the appropriate connections (e.g. ground to ground, etc.)...

    Brew Boss Systems

For my plate chiller, I rinse out the leftover wort with hot water for 1 minute. I put a warm solution of PBW and run it for about 10 minutes one direction, and then ten in the other. Rinse out with clean water. Then run Star Sans through it for a few minutes, but don't rinse that out...

    Brew Boss Systems

I'm pretty anal about my plate chiller, and I never felt like a I good hop penetration, let alone Irish moss penetration, in the wort if I put them in bags or a spider. So I feel like I have to dump them in whole. After the boil, I empty my hot wort into a kettle lined with a bag (same mesh as...

    Brew Boss Systems

You guys must be good. I find that there is always one thing that goes wrong in which I lose 15 minutes to a half an hour (e.g., last brew, the glass kettle I was using to heat up some water on an electric plate broke, with water of course going everywhere!). The other thing for me is clean up...

That is awesome. How do you do that?

    Brew Boss Systems

eBIAB can save you maybe 30 to 60 minutes. Most of your saving is lautering time. It still takes time to drain the bag (10 minutes). It's also a kettle or two less to wash, so add another 10 minutes savings. Then again, you have to clean the bag: add another five minutes back. I got into...

    Brew Boss Systems

I tend to average 80% mash efficiency for low- to modest-strength beers (up to 1.075), with 74-75 for overall efficiency. For high gravity beers (in the 1.100 OG range), it can be as low as 65% mash efficiency and 56% overall. I set my brewhouse efficiency to 70% and that gets me in the...

    Brew Boss Systems

Yes, that's what I use. Works with the adjustments I made.

    New to all-grain

I'd agree. If you want to brew 5 and even 10 gallon batches, I would use BIAB, along with software (like Brewsmith) to brew. It just makes the brewing so much less complicated with no downsides as far as I can tell.

    Brew Boss Systems

I should have been clearer. The BrewBoss system I bought a year ago came with a basket, but not a COFI basket. The type of basket used in fryers, with big holes.

    Help with Mash Recirculation

I don't use the COFI system, but I had the same recirculation problem with just a bag in the basket. I solved it by installing a "false bottom" in the basket, hanging a round barbeque grill about an inch above the bottom of the basket. Although I generally recirculate at a moderate flow, I can...

    Brew Boss Systems

With the BrewBoss system, the "false bottom" is actually a basket, so yes, you can remove the whole basked with the bag in it. That's what I do. Lifting the whole basket puts less strain on the bag. It also also me to gentle squeeze the bag by pushing down on it at the end of the drain. I...

Anyone use rice hulls and re-circ w/BIAB?

I recently used the Wilserbrewer bags with a turkey fryer basket, with a .39 crush and it was backing up. Then I added 1# of rice hulls in the middle of the mash, and it began drain properly with pump running pretty high. I need that pump to recirculate at a high volume to control the temp...

    High Gravity BIAB

RE: "This didn't totally screw your pH all up?" I recently tried splitting the mash, and it seems to have worked fine (I'm at the tail end of fermentation). The key on the pH balance is to split the grains in such a way that the pH isn't effected. You can check that with the Bru'n Water...

High Gravity Brewing vs Brew Boss vs Another Electric Brewing Setup

I agree with those who say we each have to decide how to spend our time. The markups for these systems, especially Brew-Boss, are in line with business mark ups in general--50 to 70%. I don't begrudge someone making money off of me if they are providing a product that makes me delight in...
