What hop varieties are you adding this year?

Yeah, I'm not sure either. I purchased them from Great Lakes Hops, https://www.greatlakeshops.com/apps/search?q=bramling, who described them as " An early 1900’s English heirloom aroma hop variety; related to Goldings" which made me think it was probably Brambling Cross. I love the hops...

What hop varieties are you adding this year?

Have three year Northern Brewer, Glacier and Spalt Select plants. Planted some Bramling at the same time as the others, but the Bramling did not do good at all, so pulled the crown last year. Purchased a Prussian plant from Great lakes Hops to replace it. Hopefully it'll do better.

    Bad Drivers

I get, that if you are actively passing in the left lane you should be good to go, and not feel pressured to move over for speedy gonzalas. The problem is, and it seems to be very prolific with semis and other large "trucks", who get in the left lane to pass but only go .0625 mph faster than...

    Anybody harvesting hops yet?

Lessee....I've harvested a .5 oz of Northern Brewer and 1 oz of Spalt Select dry. Not sure I'll get much of anything from my Glacier or Bramlin. Seems the cones stopped growing at about the size of a small grape for some reason and are turning brown prematurely. All first year. Pretty sad, lol.

Hop Pests ID thread: Pics, descriptions and solutions

Damn you're right! Thanks much! I've only ever seen the adults, so had no idea what the nymphs looked like.

Hop Pests ID thread: Pics, descriptions and solutions

Been dealing with Japanese beetles all summer, fairly successfully, but I noticed these little fellers on my bramling hops. I dunno if they're even doing any damage, hard to tell with all the JB damage. Any idea what these are? There are quite a few of them, so doesn't seem to be just a chance...

    Stop Scoby forming after bottleing

I wonder if maybe the PET plastic bottles is allowing too much oxygen ingress? I never get a scoby in my bottles either and I also use Grolsch style flip tops. Maybe next time I bottle I'll use a soda bottle or something just to see if it forms a scoby.

    Acid and teeth

Just have it with a meal. Eating food will help remove the acid, or at least neutralize it. Least wise, that's what I was told by my dentist back when I drank tons of soda.

    Flavour favourites

How are you guys adding your flavor combinations? I know they need to be added in a secondary environment, such as at bottling. Obviously juice is the most common answer, but there are many flavor combos I'd like to try that aren't available in juice form. For instance, mango/habanero. Should I...

    Northern Brewer Replacement

What about the little evil man in the corner counting gold coins? He wasn't there before. ;) So to sum up: Some people will continue to use NB/Midwest Supplies and some will not. I don't think anybody here will convince the other side to change their minds.

    Northern Brewer Replacement

Their attempt to control supply? They will treat grains/hop and other raw materials much like how Walmart treats it's suppliers. They will be able to command the lowest price due to volume and impact. If they complete their goal, they will put every other LHBS out of business and be the sole...

    Northern Brewer Replacement

You guys are right, I'm sure if ABInbev was able to control the entire beer market (both supply and sales), we would still have just as many options and the same amount of creativity as we currently have. After all when big beer controlled everything 30-40-50 years ago, the options were...

    Northern Brewer Replacement

By all means, keep supporting the enemy Why any one would want to support a company whose main intent is to destroy everything we love about our community is beyond me. Oh well, guess saving a few bucks is more important the preserving our heritage.

    Northern Brewer Replacement

I never found Midwest or Northern Brewers prices to be all that great anyhow, I could almost always find better prices on other Homebrewing websites. In particular, their shipping prices suck balls. They do have a great selection however. I quit using Midwest Supplies anyhow back when my credit...

    Kombucha Start

That's fair enough. Well I did go ahead and bottle it last night, the scoby was thicker than it initially appeared, probably 1/4" or so. That said, I went and purchased this last night for all future brews. And some extra large coffee filters to rubberband over the mouth. Thanks again!

    Kombucha Start

Ok, I may have gotten some of that bad info that you alluded to, as I was reading on another site that SS is fine for kombucha brewing, which is why I went with that. FYI, it is a food grade pot, so I assume it is 304 SS. You know what they say when you assume, though. :) The lid doesn't fit...

    Kombucha Start

Sorry to hijack the thread, but this seems as good a place as any to ask questions. :) When you pitch a bottle of GT kombucha, will you get a large scoby? I pretty much followed what drgonzo2k2 outlined above and everything is going good as far as I can tell. I used my 3 gallon SS pot, and just...

What Stops You From Going Pro?

Honestly? Too much back breaking labor for very little reward. I can't see myself putting in 12 hours days of hard labor, and making less than I currently do sitting in front of a computer listening to brewing podcast all day, lol. Maybe I'm just not passionate enough? Sure some "celebrity"...
