The stupidest comment on your beer

I pull my neighbor a pint of my black ipa (77 ibu 6.9% 28 srm). Neighbor says "Tastes like Newcastle." But He is cool and will learn the ways of good beer. I think the wonder bread metaphor is very apt.

wlp023 has shown I'm an idiot

I brewed Friday evening and pitched a 1L starter at full krausen into 68 wort. Things should go well, yes? 24 hours into things with the wort at 64 there was NO sign of any life. The wort was flat, there was nary a bubble to be seen anywhere and the airlock was silent. So I scratch my head...

    Pasta roller grain mills

I used a pasta mill for my first 13 all grain batches. It tore the husks a bit and the efficiency dropped slowly and steadily with each batch. Eventually I upgraded to a BC. Needless to say, I am much happier with the quality of the crush and consistent efficiencies. Plus sparging is a breeze...

The Baby-Bottle-Nipple MLT Gasket Method w/pics

I've got nipple gaskets on HLT, MLT, and Keggle. No leaks, and they work extremely well. Plus it was so much cheaper to make my own than to buy a weldless fitting. But it did take some experimentation to get to the solid, no-leaking version.

    Strong esters with US-05. WTF?

Yeah, thread resurrection here but I want to share my experience with us-05. The temps of the wort (fermometer) got down to 58 during a pale ale in December. My temp control is single stage cooling as heating is almost never needed here. Oops. This beer is currently an ester fest and I would...

DYI vs Off the shelf breakeven point?

I love the DIY aspect of this hobby and will generally spend the same amount if I feel that my product will be the equal of what I would have purchased. Heck, because of homebrewing I know way more about plumbing, electrical, and metalworking than I EVER would have otherwise. As a homeowner, DIY...

Vienna Lager Boston Lager Clone (Decoction/Krausening AG recipe)

Brewed this two weeks ago with wlp 830. This recipe turned me on to decoction; I love the constant involvement on brewday! The hop profile is identical to the original and maybe better based on some recent examples. It is still chugging away at @1.014 but when it gets to FG it will be really...

Nanobrewerys selling clones as their own

If we apply this to our own brewhouses: is it possible to exactly replicate our "own" recipes over thou course of multiple batches? My stuff is always slightly different, (though you automated brewer might have a different experience.)

    SG Sanitation

I use an old corny that was given to me and I can't get to seal. It always has 4-5 gallons of starsan in it. Makes sanitation super convenient, but only because it is broken and free.

What are the fundamentals of brewing?

I suppose my frustration is a product of understanding the process of brewing on my system, but being unfamiliar with some of the tenants of creating a recipe. I want to produce beer that fits my taste and something I can be proud to share, something that is a unique and quality product from my...

What are the fundamentals of brewing?

One of the things I have noticed in way too much lurking on this sight and my 13 AG brews is that there is not a consensus or emphasis on what the fundamentals of recipe design are. I would love to get to the point where I can come up with an imperial/ oaked/fruit/smoked/category 23 beer with a...

The great stainless single tier begins!

The thread should be retitled "The Greatest Single Tier Begins". Bling is being redefined.

CL Cornys in SoCal (Not mine)

Received mine today as well. 3 Cornelius and a Firestone, all held pressure. Nice guy and now I can brew more.:rockin:

    Spent Grains as Chicken Feed?

I dump my grains in the chicken yard right after mashing. When it cools they scratch and eat all of the grain pieces but leave all of the husks behind. They LOVE it.

CL Cornys in SoCal (Not mine)

A rare find on CL in these parts: http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/for/2277007322.html Seems like a good price these days.

    DIY (sort of) lager fermenter

that's the way you use the pool. Man this tastes awesome after 16 days in primary. I've got a keezer all set to lager for me, and the gravity is 1.013 right now. My only worry is that it won't get too dry- but I don't even know if this is an issue in secondary/lagering. It will spend 6 weeks at...

    DIY (sort of) lager fermenter

While working on the pool a month ago, I noticed (besides the collection of leaves and dirt from the Santa Anas) that my pool holds 52 F all of the time. It is a 30,000 gallon pool that gets no direct sun and won't break 70 F until mid-July So my first lager, a Maibock, is fermenting happily in...

Yet another google search. What else? (A fortuitous search to be sure.)

    Howdy from SoCal

I've brewed before, but DME is of no interest to me now. I've got space, time, and a little $ so it is all grain for me now. Currently gathering all of my goods from craigslist, (MLT, Keggle, Fermenter, but no Corny's ,) and getting ready to brew some serious beer thanks to the great...
