    ABV measurement sans hydrometer/refractometer

I hope this is the right spot; I figured the science-minded folks would know how to answer this best. Thanks in advance for your help. The question: Is there a (relatively) easy way to determine alcohol content, either %mass or %vol, without using hydrometer or refractometer readings...

    Critique my IIPA recipe

I'm getting ready to place an order but I want some feedback on an extract IPA recipe. Just a 3-gal batch for now, until I get the recipe perfect...I want something hoppy but not overly bitter (hence the late hop additions), light in color but with subtle earthiness (from the peated malt). 6...

    Brown's Whiskey Porter

Anyone ever try Brown's Whiskey Barrel Aged Porter? Got a 24oz bottle from a friend. The brewery is in Troy, NY right down the road from his house. They age it for two months in bourbon barrels according to the label. I haven't tried it yet, just wondering if anyone has heard of it or tried...

    First batch bottled!

Hey folks, just finished up bottling my first batch, a nut brown ale extract. OG of 1.055, couldn't get the FG below 1.018, although I was shooting for 1.014. I'm sure it'll be fine, though. Should be a hair under five percent abv. Roped my younger sister into helping me bottle (she's 12)...

    First batch starting to ferment!

Boiled up my first batch Wednesday evening. It was a Nut Brown extract w/ specialty grains from Northern Brewer with Wyeast 1028. I snagged an old-fashioned grain mill from the folks and was immediately surprised at how much work went into the boil. I'm thinking it will pay off in the end...

    Mason jars as bottling alternative

Pretty self-explanatory, any thoughts/recommendations reagrding the use of canning-type mason jars in lieu of regular bottling? I can forsee a few issues, but was wondering if anyone had tried it out before.
