    Bazooka Screen to Manifold

Wanted to provide an update. I replaced my bazooka screen with a stainless braid and I did see an improvement in the wort clearing much quicker. And the mash tun drained easier without needing to tip it up to get the last wort out. I guess it is best to stick with the tried and true methods...

Thanks everyone for the responses. Sounds like the braid is the clear winner so far.

    Bazooka Screen to Manifold

I am currently Batch Sparging with a Bazooka screen in a rectangular cooler and I am considering trying a Manifold. I like the Bazooka screen because it is easy to remove and clean and my efficiency is good, but I normally have to Vorlauf about 2qts (3 times) before running clear and I have to...

What size hose for blowoff tube

I have 6.5 gallon carboys and I use 1" ID x 1.25" OD, nice fit. I have worried that dust or other things could settle between the tubing and carboy neck opening and when removing the tubing these could fall into beer, so I have started covering this with tin foil just to be safe.

    Hot alcohol taste!??

I just kegged a Belgian Ale with same hot alcohol / solvent like flavors. I have read that conditioning over time will mellow this out. If I have the keg at 40 degF, will this condition out the same as if it were at room temperature?

    My first Pliny the Elder

I have brewed the Pliny Clone twice. Like what others have said, the key to making it great is getting a dry finish to make the hops really stand out. To do this, mash low and pitch a lot of healthy yeast. Both times, my finishing gravity was 1.005. Here is what I did. Mashed at 148 deg...

Blow-off tubes - When to use?

You can never predict how the fermentation is going to go, so I always use a blow-off on my 6.5 gal. primary carboy. Better safe than sorry. If I do a secondary (for dry hopping or extended fermentation), I use a 3-piece airlock on my 5 gal. carboy.

    Keg Cleaning?

If you suspect any of the Kegs had been used for Rootbeer, you definitely should replace the o-rings.

    Kegging Brett Beer

Thanks for the replies. For those interested, here's my recipe (5.5 gal): 7lbs Belgian Pilsner 1lb Caramel Vienne 8 oz. Corn Sugar 1.25 oz. Hallertauer (90 min) 1.0 oz. Styrian Golding (15 min) 0.5 oz. Styrian Golding (0 min) 1.0 oz. Styrian Golding (Dry Hop) Wyeast #3522 (Belgian...

    Kegging Brett Beer

I have just brewed my first Brett beer and I'm thinking about kegging it. I will be dedicating a keg/lines to funky beers so I am not worried about contaminating other brews. Any other concerns with kegging a Brett beer? I have heard that when bottled, a Brett beer can change character over...

    Getting a good airlock seal

That is a pain , I know. I have switched to a carboy cap or have you tried a universal bung, that is hollow in the middle? Otherwise I just use a paper towel to wipe off the rubber stopper.

    dry hop without a bag?

I did exactly as TheWeeb did, for my pliny clone. It worked great.

    Which Pliny?

I brewed the new one, with the Pliny Hop Pack from farmhouse brewing supply. Turned out great, best beer I have brewed. I think the key is to have a low finishing gravity to make the Hops really pop. I mashed at 148deg for 90 min, boil for 90 min, aerated with O2 and pitched a 2L starter from...

    WLP655 Belgian Sour Mix

This is my first sour/funky brew, so I thought I would just jump in and try it. My base brew is a Belgian Dubbel, because this is what I have ready. The primary yeast was WYeast 3787, O.G. was 1.076, S.G. is now at 1.012. I plan to take 1 gallon and then add the WLP655. Is it better to use...
