Should I stir up the brew?

Hey guys just wondering if I should stir up my Stone IPA brew I have. Its only been like 3 days, but I know the yeast I have is a high fluctuating yeast and it falls out pretty fast of suspension. Should I swish it around at all or even just gently swish around the trub/yeast with a...

how long can I store a starter for before the yeast go bad

Hey guys, I made a 1 liter starter on 2/16/11 and let it ferment for 3 days, and then stuck it in the fridge on 2/19/11. I got really sidetracked and haven't used it but the tinfoil is still on the top of the starter and the yeast are all sitting in the bottom. Could I create another 1...

Secondary dry hopping - hops on top or in beer?

Hey guys, just wondering. I'm dry hopping for the first time. I just threw my pellets in and all the hops are sitting on top of my beer rather then in it. Should I swirl it around to get the hops into the beer or just leave it as it is?

Can i wash yeast from a starter of High Fluccuating yeast?

Ok, so I recently just used a WLP002 1.5L starter to make a Stone IPA clone and it's turning out GREAT! The problem is I went to wash the yeast and with all the hops in there from the break, it was near impossible. I tried to wash it anyway but the yeast was so heavy and clumpy, that it fell...

Stone IPA and fermentation temps . .

So, I've been fermenting my Stone IPA clone for the past week and I have kept it at around 66-68F for the entire fermentation. Now, I have read time and time again that leaving the beer in the primary for a little bit longer before going to secondary to dry hop would be a good idea to help clean...

2nd AG and have just a few questions. .

Ok, so my first AG I got extremely low gravity! What was supposed to be 1.048 ended up being 1.031 and I was given some pointers and I think everything really turned out much better. Let me give you the skinny . . . Beer : AHS Stone IPA Clone (13 lb grains) Strike water : 5 Gallons @ 152F...

    Wyeast 3944 taste . . VERY YEASTY?

So, I just brewed a Belgian White from AHS with this yeast and I previously brewed a Blue Moon clone using the same one. I have noticed that I have a VERY YEASTY flavor from these. I only left the AHS on the primary for 2 weeks, and it was done fermenting after 6 days. The AHS Belgian white...

    Boil off really high?

Hey guys and girls . . . just wondering ; is 1.8 Gallons an hour a little high for my boil-off? It may be 1.7 but my measurements said 1.8. So what say you? On a side note . . I'm going to be doing my brewing today and wanted to know . . . we all know that sun-light hurts our beer . ...

Did the sun ruin my Weinsteffaner . . ?

Hello Everyone . . Well, I think I totally ruined my beer. I bottled it non-the-less, so only time will tell but I'm pretty sure its gone bad. Here's what happened . . I did a PM of AHS Weihnsteffaner Heff. and I put it in a bucket of water in my family room with a black t-shirt over it...

Did the Primary Vs. Secondary test . . .

So, my friend has been brewing with me and he feels that moving to a secondary helps with the flavor of the beer, and I told him that the growing census is that its actually better to leave the beer in the primary for the duration of the conditioning. So . . . we did it! We bought two of the...

So you built your MLT huh? . .

For all you people who built your MLT out of the Rubbermaid 10 Gallon cylinder from HD and what not. . . when you built the pickup line from the SS braided hose . . did you keep the inner tube or did you replace it with food grade tubing? I ask because I just finished building my MLT and I used...

Fermentation Temps with rubbermaid and aquarium heater. .

I'm building my temperature controlled fermentation chamber (rubbermaid tub with a aquarium heater) and I was wondering . . if I put the primary into the tub and set the temp at 69F (This is a Wheat beer with a belgian yeast) will the temperature inside the fermenter (glass carboy) be the same...

    First PM a success!

Thanks to the community for all the help throughout my time here. I will be donating VERY soon to support this site! I just bottled my first PM last night. The OG (which i believe to be the reading of the beer right before pitching the yeast) was 1.050 (Expected was 1.053) and the FG was...

Does using a bottle filler cause enough aeration to ruin a beer?

Hey guys, I just bought a bottling stick, and when filling beers it seems to create a lot of turbulence and may aerate the wort when doing this. Has anyone else noticed this? Am I the only one who is a little scared of it? I want to be sure this next bottling day goes well . . (Bottling...

This should be a really simple question to answer . .

I made my MLT from the directions on here with a 10 Gallon rubbermaid home depot cooler. I have the ball valve and everything. I am going to be doing my first all grain soon, but I have a Partial Mash with about 5.5 lbs of LME and only 2.5 Lbs of grains. I don't know if it would be a good idea...

Question about All Grain draining from a MLT.

So I just converted a 10 Gallon rubbermaid cooler (the cylinder type) into my MLT and I have used a SS supply line for my filter. I see tons of pictures of people who don't use any kind of a nylon mesh bag at all when doing AG in theirs. I was wondering if it may be easier if I used one? I...

Help me with my water . . if you dare!

Hey guys, So I've made the move to partial mash and am going to move to all grain here in the next month or two and I just found my city's annual water quality report. I was hoping someone can help me read it. I'm going to mainly brew wheat beers. I like my bannana, cloves, and sweetness. So...
