    Inert gas for purging kegs

Good point about partial pressure, didn't even think of that. And yes, my assumptions on stratification were just plain wrong :) That mostly came from using an Argon 'blanket' in welding to protect against oxygen, but that requires a constantly flooding gas, so not the same thing at all.

Did I under Pitch liquid Yeast ?

Ah, Brewfather has a selectable pitchrate in a fairly coarse 5 steps, ranging from 0.35 to 2.0, but I never knew what units that was in. :)

    New Zealand Brewers

Oh wow, I had a troll around the Internet, but didn't find anything :) Of course that was last night... I will definitely pop into Brewtopians, let me put that into my calendar right now...

Hi all, Is there a homebrew club in the greater Wellington? I have had a look, but can't find anything. Sander of Tawa

    Inert gas for purging kegs

Based on my understanding that argon is so much denser that it would actually stratify out: For purging a keg, I think it may work, but no advantage. For serving a fully carbonated beer - here I suppose it would insulate the beer in the keg, keeping it from oxidising, but that really isn't an...

    Inert gas for purging kegs

Hi all, I normally use CO2 for purging kegs, usually while fermenting. And I assume this is the method used by all: I fill the keg with starsan, use the fermenter / CO2 tank to push out the starsan, leaving the tank filled with mostly CO2. But looking around the garage I also have Argon. I...

Did I under Pitch liquid Yeast ?

Even for my (not very strong - 1.048 OG) Blonde Ale, Brewfather says 2 packets of US-05, whereas the packet says one packet should be enough.

How Many Gallons Brewed in 2023

    So far 3 x 5gallons of American Blond: 1604.25 + 15 = 1619.25. Ask me again on Monday... :)

    The Smells of Brewing

I love all the smells of brewing, the fresh smell of hops, opening the grain bag, the mash smell... But my wife hates the smell of the mash / boil. Of course I just make sure I am mostly brewing when she is out and make sure I vent the Boil as well as possible, but just curious of there are...

What do you do with all the beer?

My original post, although accurate, was somewhat flippant and your reply is much more thought out and professional than I deserve. Thank you. And yes, you are exactly right, I currently try to have my blond ale and a Porter (now that we're heading for winter) on tap and then potentially have...

What do you do with all the beer?

Ironically Jesse is fairly close to me, I'll be heading up to his area tomorrow for work, but I have never actually met him... But he was instrumental in getting me into home distilling.

What do you do with all the beer?

And a few more replies, I have actually distilled a batch of bad beer before, but instead of running in through a pot still for whiskey I ran it through the reflux still and made a vodka that eventually ended up as gin :) Of course this I legal in NZ, so if you're furyhe afield, don't say I...

Sorry, New Zealand may a bit far away... :)

What do you do with all the beer?

I could put out the word to my son's circle, but then I'd have to bottle and I'm too lazy for that! :)

Rust in used keg, is this ok?

Similarly to what other people have said, clean first then worry. I have never seen a plastic gas in tube so can't comment on that, but generally the dip tubes are easier to replace than to worry about extensive cleaning. To clean the surface rust / contaminant off I would use a non metallic...

What do you do with all the beer?

Ok, this may be a question that is not generally asked here, but here is my problem. I like brewing and would love to brew much more often, but even though I make single keg batches, it takes me forever to get through the beer. And looking at how often some of you brew you must have a better...
