First Mead, brand new to brewing

My $1.50 contribution (no longer 2 cents… inflation and all…) - listen to everyone about the hydrometer. - the learning curve is short. - “man made mead” and “doing the most” are two great you tube channels that can give you a really solid base for making simple honey hootch to some really...

    Steeping / Mashing Oats

Update: Life happened. Lots of things flipping upside down and lots of things put on hold. The brew sat in my fridge for months while we got life back on track. It was underwhelming but drinkable and it was a fun experiment. Thanks everyone for the help on this! Next in the que is finding a...

Thinking about a carbonated cyser, questions

I literally at this moment have several swingtops in my hodge podge ordinance disposal set up: large stainless pots with large stainless mixing bowls on top because I tried to pasteurize and they started fizzing like crazy. I’ve popped the seals several times to release pressure but they’re...

    Smells like Christmas. :)

    Steeping / Mashing Oats

Sorry for the delay in my reply. the hope is the oat “milk” (goopy starch really) won’t ferment and just make a Thickums McThicboi spiced cider. But I am also now curious about straight up fermented oat milk… like, what how would you classify that? And would amylase be needed? Store bought oat...

    Steeping / Mashing Oats

Brew is in the jug. Ended up using half a quart of the oat milk, just no room for more. We’ll see what happens in about … five million weeks. :) thanks everyone for the help.

    Steeping / Mashing Oats

Toasted oats taste great out of the pan and smelled toasted not burnt. Oat liquid smells slightly toasted and tastes like oatmeal and there’s just a little bitterness but like barely.

    Steeping / Mashing Oats

We’ll I ended up with two quarts of oat milk or whatever it is. My gut says that’s overkill for a 1 gal batch just from the standpoint of volume as in I don’t want to have any less juice in the recipe… I wonder if I could reduce the oatmilk…. so I think I’ll just stick with 1 quart for now. I...

    Steeping / Mashing Oats

Ok. 1lb of oats toasted. Going to get a gallon of water up to 160-ish then steep the oats for an hour, cool then strain. Here’s my main recipe. I’ve done 5 batches of this and it’s always a winner. I’m always tweaking this recipe so it seems like a logical candidate. Reindeer Snuggles...

    Adding Juice to Secondary

Yeast count! Never even thought about that. I’m pretty miserly with my yeast and I’ll split a packet across 5 1 gallon fermenters. Dang, good point.

Thinking about a carbonated cyser, questions

All I can contribute is about swing tops. I’ve carbonated cyser in them. I’ve never had it happen to me but Ive heard that upon over-carbing the seals fail before the glass does which is bittersweet. best of luck!

    Adding Juice to Secondary

This is my first time fermenting in the winter months - ciders, meads, wine-cooler thingers, ginger beer. It has all taken at least a month and is still going in primary. Longest it’s ever taken in my experience. my guess is it’s got to be the temp you’re fermenting at and the yeast you’re...

    Steeping / Mashing Oats

Really there is no need to send me anything. I appreciate it though. This is an issue of waiting out the next 2-3 pay periods. We do a zero budget in my home and brew money comes eventually in that cycle. My current plan is to make a gallon with some toasted oats and see if I win. By the time...

    Steeping / Mashing Oats

Just want to add that since I've posted this, there have been lots of "oats in cider" posts that have been popping up in the "Similar threads" box. Granted, they're older threads with few-ish responses but I will be digging into them for any nuggets I can get but so far they all talk about...

    Steeping / Mashing Oats

    - Right. Just want to add body. - Totally ok with pasteurizing to halt any secondary fermentation and thanks for the tip - didn’t think about that. - Beer Cider hybrid is not THE main goal (why I’m not married to mashing the oats with barley or something) BUT I’m totally ok with that happening...

    Steeping / Mashing Oats

I appreciate that, but no need to do it right now - that data might be wasted on me anyway. I barely understand gravity and how to use a hydrometer. At any rate, I'm working on my garage and truck atm. This brew is in the que and will happen within the next 3-5 days. Really appreciate it...

    Steeping / Mashing Oats

I thiiiink I'm tracking with you. Starting to go over my head though with all the decimals. But 1oz oats / gallon I can totally understand. Seems like it would become sludge pretty fast.

    Carbonation in primary fermenter

It's like watching a campfire or an aquarium or something. :)

    Steeping / Mashing Oats

Batch size can be anywhere from 1gallon to 3 gallon. And that begs the question - how much oats? I guess, how much per gallon of juice? Also, I want to make sure I have the process down here. - Toast oats in pan - Add water (or juice?) - Bring up to 150 (For how long? 30 min?) - Add that goop...
