    Hops surplus

I am thinking I have more hops in my freezer than I will be able to brew with before my next harvest. I guess I had a bumper first year crop! But I started reading some old posts where ppl have brewed with 12oz - 3lbs of hops per batch? Before I start giving hops away can anyone share how...

Zeus Hops - when are they ripe?

I have a couple Zeus Hop bines with a lot of hops. I'm a little confused about when this variety is ready to be picked. A lot of them feel papery on the outside with some browning, but when I squeeze them they still feel pretty meaty and "heavy". Ripe? My nugget, magnum, and cascades all...

Broken Bottle - NOT a Bomb though

Last January I brewed up a Dortmunder style lager and bottled about 60 12 oz bottles. It has been delicious and today I was loading the last 12 pack in the fridge when I pulled one of the bottles out and it was empty. Then I discovered the bottom had broken off at some point. Definitely not...

    Ticks

I've been on the same piece of property for 24 years. Three acres in the country and aside from the creek line I keep it all mowed. I've always had a garden but this year I expanded it and added a trellis for hops. I planted 8 hop plants and they are starting to take off. Now up until now...

Is anyone else growing barley for home brewing? I am wondering what others due on a smaller scale to prevent weeds and fungus in their barely crop, if anything. Thank you! PS wasn't sure where else to post this.

Aging in Bottles - how long is too long?

I'm definitely seeing the benefits of being patient and letting my brews age in bottles for several weeks as it improves the flavor and overall smoothness / drinkability. But at what point does it get to the point where it becomes detrimental? How long is too long?

    Porter primer

I have a 6 gallon batch of porter coming due for bottling. If I use maple syrup to bottle condition will any of the maple flavor come through or should I just stick with corn sugar?

    Bottle Label Removal

Got back into home brewing a few months ago. Still had my old bottles from back when I home brewed 15 years ago and it's neat to bring them out of retirement, some with painted on labels of now defunct Hoster's brewery here in central Ohio. But, I quickly realized brewing up a batch every...

    Hoster Gold Top?

Does anyone have a clone recipe for Hoster Gold Top? Hoster Beer - Columbus, Ohio Years ago it was one of my central Ohio favorites but the company has been defunct for quite a few years. The presence of this website is confusing to me however. No place around here still sells it but the...

    advice for hops in Ohio

If you could grow 4 hop varieties in Ohio what would you recommend? We are USDA zone 5/6 at 1,008' elevation. I am thinking of brewers gold, cascade, magnum, and nugget but curious how more experienced growers would think.

    Any Buckeyes out there?

This isn't about football! (not that I'm opposed to talking Buckeye football LOL) Just wondering who else out there is in the central Ohio area. Would love to hear from anyone more experienced at brewing who would be willing to show me a tour of their set up. Thanks

    Auto Siphons

Is there such a thing as an auto siphon that isn't a cheap piece of junk? I don't mind paying more than 15 bucks for something of quality please give your recommendations. Thank you HBT community!

    Also getting back

Hi I'm Tony from Pataskala Ohio. I just retired from coaching girls' fastpitch after 14 years which took up a lot of time year round. It's been that long since I brewed a batch and I'm excited to get back into it.
