    Low-Budget Stainless Pressure Fermenters

Don’t think, just buy one like I did. I have the 23L/6.1gal torpedo keg with the regular sized corny lid. Used exclusively as a fermenter with a floating dip tube and a mesh filter. The weld line on mine is right at the 21L mark, so I fill with wort just over that point. Gives a full 2L of...

Wort size in a 5 gallon Corny Keg...

I was able to run 17-18L (4.5-4.75gal) batches fairly regularly in a regular corny keg. With a floating dip tube and filter I lose usually one L/qt to trub. So 16-17L (4.25-4.5gal) without really trying hard. I'm sure i could squeeze a bit more, but i opted to pick up a 23L (6.1gal) keg as...

What Online Brew stores do you like?

What is the priority? Ingredients or brewing hardware? I've ordered parts for kegs and what not from Williams and MoreBeer in the last year and have been OK. Last Morebeer order got a 10lb sack of Vienna and Munich to fill out an order and went fine. Ritebrew.com is a source I've used as...

What are your tips for keeping costs down

I went for the 6.5 also. The 120/240 option was the cinch for me, and I've already made an adapter cable for my dryer outlet, so no alteration to the unit. I also chose to go with MIAB out of the gate with a 5 gallon round cooler and a brew bag. This way, I can mash in a cheap cooler, while I...

What are your tips for keeping costs down

I took it to mean, for all of those situations where you need pressure to "push" fluid in/out of kegs on non-brew days. Each point mentioned was cleaning or prep related. I've considered similar with an inexpensive amazon air compressor. I agree tho, would never use air near wort. Only with...

What are your tips for keeping costs down

Best tip I can offer is to read. Read forums like this, or the other fine caches of homebrew enthusiasts. Read magazines, blog posts. Listen to Podcasts or live streams for ideas. I started out relatively recently (2020) and didn't have a bunch of hardware to steer my path. So I read...

Changing lines over to EVABarrier question

I second what @Deric said. If your pour is great with 8' PVC, a 5' line will work well. I use 4mm EVAbarrier for both bev and gas lines. They work well.

That's where I am with this as well, efficacy. The science being discussed was interesting.

Corny Keg Corny 5G Cooler Giveaway

I've got a trading gig with a fellow brewer, keg-for-keg. We start our visit with 2 nearly full kegs and depart with one about 4/5 full!

On the fence about using yeast slury....

Recently listened to the latest episode #80 of The Bru Lab - Applying the Science: Yeast @McMullan, I've been reading your consistent, unceasing drumbeat for the common-sense option if you are prepared: Pitching live ACTIVE yeast. This podcast made me understand this POV. I get it now. My...

    Hello everyone

<waves> I 2nd the previous post, good info and conversation. What's your fancy? I'm here cuz I like English Brown Ale and it's pretty hard to find it in the Midwest, so I said screw it and went in on some $35/keg deal with a co-worker. Making beer is fun. Drinking the fruits of your own...

Transfer lines & connectors - innovative options?

wow... <looks at glass> how many are we at today now? :D you took it a whole extra step further, using for serving. well played!

Transfer lines & connectors - innovative options?

Now, in my head I'm combining multiple ideas from above... Say you spund a batch to 20 PSI. This time, do a water/starsan purge of the serving keg, so only ~20L of CO2 would be needed to purge. Then, once the serving keg is purged... move the spunding valve. Use a gas-bev jumper, and place...

Transfer lines & connectors - innovative options?

Looks like I'm a bit late to the party. :D I do alot of what you were considering already. The article posted above where @doug293cz does magic with numbers is just GOLD! All the math showing where any 19L/5gal batch of wort with SG above 1.040 can easily generate 440L of gaseous CO2, which...

    Recommendations Without Breaking The Bank

The blue plastic comes off easily enuf... just make it an ASMR afternoon and all will be well. Bearings: never given me issues, always smooth sailing. I play it easy and run a near-constant 0.30" gap (about a credit card...ish) pretty consistent.

    Recommendations Without Breaking The Bank

I have a Cereal Killer 2-roller mill. Regular price is a benny, sometimes you can find it for $80 or $90 on a deal. It's nothing fancy but coupled with an "okay" corded drill it does well and has for about 20 batches. I don't fiddle much with the crush, just occasionally re-check with a...

    Spunding - new frontier

20 PSI and holding sounds great! Please report back once this batch has had time to crash/lager/whatever-ciders-do. I have used pressure to suppress ester formation when fermenting a lager at room temp with good results. I'm curious if there will be any flavor changes (for good or ill) that...

    Dusting off the cobwebs

I have made DIY PBW as referenced by the very helpful HBT link. ;) TL;DR - In a pinch OXY-Clean FREE (no ink, dyes or perfumes) can suffice with fairly hot 150F water for a good soak, then a good rinse. If you are able to source some TSP/90 (sodium metasilicate) from Ace Hardware or similar...
