    Pumpkin ale

I'd be interested in how this turns out if you brew it. I made an Extract Pumpkin Porter last fall and was very pleased on the results still being a newer brewer. There was a canned pumpkin shortage in my area which made it difficult to get everything I needed. I didn't think to use Sweet...

    Another mediocre beer...getting frustrated

For 3 of my first batches I'm fairly certain that the cause was the LME and lighter beers (Wheat, Citrus IPA, Blonde). I have since switched strictly to DME and haven't had the very "off" flavor. It didn't seem present in the darker Brown Ale (Batch 3) using LME. I went to the Off Flavor link...

make a magnet food safe by coating?

I work in an industry that uses many magnets, but sadly nothing requiring food grade coatings. Most of what we use is Black Epoxy (or a slightly modified variation) or Nickel Plated. Here is a good resource of the typical coating and plating for magnets: Magnet Plating and Coating Options -...

How big of a batch can you do on a stove?

I do extract currently, usually boil 2.5-3 gallon wort for 5 gallon fermentation batches. If I had the kettle and space above, easy to do more. Gas stove

    Attempting a Pumpkin Porter

OKAY, update, this is the most delicious brew I have made to date. Only 3 reviews but a huge hit and I will be delivering some bottles for a few others to try. This will be a yearly brew. I have labeled it Harvest Moon Pumpkin Porter and loaded what I could into Brewer's Friend if anyone is...

How do you all cool your wort?

I put down a layer of ice then my kettle on top of it. Then I put in some water then more ice around the sides (from an ice bag) and then more water. Usually cools it down enough in 20-30 minutes to pitching temps. I also fill up some Tupperware and put in the freezer before I hit my smack pack...

    Attempting a Pumpkin Porter

Picking up the ingredients today to brew this weekend. I'll try and remember to post back in a couple months

    Attempting a Pumpkin Porter

Thank you for your feedback! Definitely don't want to risk anything unpleasant in the end. I can no longer edit my first post, but I switched it out with Weyermann Dehusked Carafa III (roasted barley malt, dark). Do you think I will need a second muslin bag for steeping the grains? I think I...

    Attempting a Pumpkin Porter

I appreciate you taking the time to check my thread and post your recipe, I am surely going to go with McCormick's Pumpkin Pie Spice (from Wal-Mart). Looks like your AG is basically the same amount of baked pumpkin. In researching for Extract, I saw that a lot of people were frustrated with...

    Attempting a Pumpkin Porter

Thinking about buying everything early this week. Still rather new, perhaps I put this in the wrong forum section. Should I see if it can be moved to a Recipe Database if more appropriate?

    Attempting a Pumpkin Porter

Hello everyone, I haven't done anything outside of premade extract kits yet, but thinking of doing a Pumpkin Porter similar to the one here: The Elusive Pumpkin Porter LHBS will crush and bundle all of the specialty grains together and can only be purchased to the nearest ounce. 5 Gallon...

    Dry hopping: primary or secondary?

My previous brew I also was considering this and was recommended directly into primary for 5 or so days from bottling day. I went with marbles in a cheesecloth bag thinking I would recover the bags, but I really didn't want to after seeing all of the hop debris so I just threw those away. Only...

If I decide not to dry hop

I decided to wait until tonight to bottle. Picking up a scale to more accurately measure priming sugar since I bought a bigger bag of it this last time.

If I decide not to dry hop

Okay, I used two cheesecloth bags with marbles in each and 0.5 oz of Simcoe hops, put them in the fermenter on Thursday. The airlock is barely pulsing maybe about every minute or two. Is this a sign I shouldn't be bottling it tomorrow? I understand the 48 hour thing between hydrometer...

If I decide not to dry hop

I ordered some cheesecloth bags for possible straining when transferring, or I may also weigh it down with some sanitized marbles and put the hops in it for the dry hopping: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07J5P9WVV/ Does anyone see any issues with that?
