    Pictures of hop plants

3rd season. Just harvested these two plants today. Huge palm sized cones this season. Did 12 strings instead of 6 this time, one for each bine. It really had that canopy feel! Love drinkin a homebrew under the hops✌️

    Identification help

I have a “cascade” bought from a second supplier in the middle of two legit cascades. It’s noticeably less vigorous, lighter green, different leaf shape, and a pronounced red vein. Can I get a ball park of varieties to consider what I have here. First is cascade second is “cascade”

Lettig hops grow at an angle

Keep in mind that hops want to grow up to 25ft. With the lower height they will begin to bush out sending many entangling laterals when they meet at the top. It may complicate harvest and confuse you of what is what. Next year you could add some cross bars and wires on the tops ends to separate...

    Sunken soil

I have hops in some wooden boxes set level into a slope. I noticed the soil level drop about 3-5 inches below the wood between the three boxes. Everything is fine and popping up but next year I’d like to bring that back up. Will I be fine removing the mulch layer and leveling up the soil end of...

Anybody have a plant or rhizomes?

If the company you order from can provide certification that the plants are disease free you should be able to get them sent to you. I believe only Oregon and Washington suppliers with a special permit from the Idaho state dept of ag can send to Idaho or it may be that you need a permit yourself...

    For the Dads

Just want to say thank you everyone for the great advice here! You are all awesome. I love the thought of sharing the experience with my daughter. Even if she doesn’t want to brew with me in the future, it’s a fun hands-on learning experience and may inspire her in other ways. I have lots of...

    For the Dads

I have a 10 month old and I haven’t brewed since she was 1 month. It’s been difficult to find the time. What are some great time saving tips for a new dad so I can have a bottle with my babe?

@Fly_Guy also on the leave pulling, the lower foot yes, any slightly damaged though above unless affected by mildew or skeletonized by bugs or totally done for, leave as much as you can. These leaves are still photosynthesizing at a lower percentage. Work on keeping those side arms up off the...

    2nd year growing hops

Procrastinated on that early spring growth flush cut and experiencing bull shoot performance myself. After pruning to 6 bines per plant and 2 months later... The cascades are doing really well. The nodal spacing is pretty large but having these multiple bines helped fill it in. The side arms...

    Ticks

The ticks might prefer setting up shop higher up on these newly planted hops in the field to snag hosts? Damned ticks got em in my woods 50 ft from my hops but they never show up on mine. You could try eliminating vegetation and applying insecticide around the bases of the plants?

Homemade Sake + Making Koji Rice

@RemyBD I’ve never done a cereal mash but I believe you’d bring it to like 70c for 5 min then bring to boil for 30. Then this is added to main mash and proceed as normal. I’m starting to rethink this whole thing. The idea is to let the spores eliminate doing the mash conversion. I know that the...

Homemade Sake + Making Koji Rice

@passedpawn i think that wyeast 4347 is a great choice, I’ll be getting a sake yeast the next time I do this. Which I’m hoping will be over the summer and just keeping my kegs a bit warmer at like 48F for the sake yeast to still do its thing.

Homemade Sake + Making Koji Rice

@RemyBD The combination of inoculation of koji-kin and using higher polish sushi rice liquify the rice easily in fermentation. Bringing in another grain to the mix may work if you mash them but in that case you would be adding only the collected liquid, as the grains don’t breakdown. If you use...

Homemade Sake + Making Koji Rice

@slmets i only tasted when it settled out a bit after pressing. The more of the cloudy lees I had mixed in the glass the more tart. The pressing process I used wasn’t the greatest and I hope to figure out a better way next time and also let time take care of breaking down the rice longer. The...

    2nd year growing hops

The nuggets are the last pic and they are all very long internode shoots and hollow I believe. It’s been said they don’t produce as much and can kink in wind. But at the same time I’d hate to cut it all to see a sad second growth response when I could’ve kept them growing. This plant had only a...

    2nd year growing hops

So here we are after a long tiring weird 2020 and the hops are sprouting up big time. I grew cascades chinooks and nuggets and they all are reaching for the twine now with a dozen or more shoots at each site. Last year I trained any growth from the rhizome plantings to maximize leaf set and...
