    Kölsch Bee Cave Brewery Kölsch

Brewed this beer twice (third time coming soon) - first time I layered for 3 weeks, second time I layered for just 1 week. I couldn't say one was better than the other - both were delicious. It's a good beer to play around with the hops on - different varieties and the timing of each addition...

    Kölsch Bee Cave Brewery Kölsch

Briess Pilsen malt is made from 2 row barley. 2 row or 6 row indicates how many rows of grain on each stalk of barley. So yes, that malt will be perfect for this beer.

    Kölsch Bee Cave Brewery Kölsch

I know what you mean about the flocculation - it's one of those yeasts that doesn't pack down hard but instead keeps about an inch of haze at the bottom of the bottle. My beer came out pretty clear save for that bit at the bottom but I don't mind adding that bit to my glass though because I...

    Kölsch Bee Cave Brewery Kölsch

I brewed this recently with Pacifica hops and K-97 yeast. It lagered for 2 weeks and then had another 3 weeks in the bottle. It came out beautifully. Pale yellow with a sweet citrus nose. The taste is citrus, sherbet and wheat. It will be an awesome summer beer. I'd love to try this yeast in...

American Porter Bee Cave Brewery Robust Porter

I brewed this again today. Everything went well except I kind of forgot it was a 90min boil. I added the hops thinking it was a 60min boil and then realised part way through my mistake. So I removed the hops after 60mins and then let it boil for another 30mins. Will this have any effect on the...

American Porter Bee Cave Brewery Robust Porter

Oh ok, I thought when you said it was carbonated naturally that you were transferring it to keg when it was almost done fermenting, but not quite, resulting in the remaining sugars fermenting in the keg and carbonating the beer (spending). Didn't realise you were referring to carbing with sugar.

Looks awesome. Naturally carbing is also called "Spunding" right? What was the gravity reading when you transferred it to the keg and then what did it finish out at? And can you do this if you're bottling?

    Belgian Tripel Tripel Karmeliet Clone

I`ve never used Grains of Paradise but Star Anise obviously gives an anise/licorice flavour. That being said, I couldn`t detect any defined flavours from any of the spices because they are used in restraint. I think they are there to add a bit more complexity rather than contribute any prominent...

American Pale Ale Russian River Row 2 Hill 56 Clone

Really, K-97? What did it attenuate down to? Any interesting flavours from the yeast? I just brewed a Kolsch with this yeast but haven`t tried it yet. I was thinking of trying it in something hoppy. Apparently it leaves a little bit of haze and gives a fluffy head.

American Porter Bee Cave Brewery Robust Porter

I brewed this back in April, leaving out half of the Maltodextrin (just because that much white powder in a beer scared me a bit). I left it in the fermentor for 3 weeks and then in the bottle for 3 weeks before trying it. It came out really nice. It was initially a little bit sweet, not quite...

Blonde Ale Centennial Blonde (Simple 4% All Grain, 5 & 10 Gall)

I brewed this recently using same quantities but subbed with: Gladfield Pilsner malt Gladfield Gladiator malt Gladfield Light crystal Glad field Vienna malt Taiheke 7%AA for all the hop additions All the numbers came in on point. I bottle and the carbonation was a bit low after 2 weeks but...

    Kölsch Bee Cave Brewery Kölsch

Hey guys I`d like to brew my first Kolsch based on this recipe. I`m in NZ so I try to use hops from here as much as possible as they are cheaper and fresher so my hop bill will look like this: 30g Pacifica (FKA Pacific Hallertau) 5%AA @ 60mins 10g Pacifica 5%AA @ 30mins 10g Taiheke (FKA NZ...

    Strong Bitter Common Room ESB

I brewed this back in February and have been drinking it for a few weeks now. With all my beers, I try to use NZ ingredients (because they are usually fresher and cheaper than imported) so I have substituted the malts and hops here. I researched the malt alternatives which have the most similar...

Saison Nelson Sauvin Dry Hopped Saison

I brewed this about 6 weeks ago. I tweaked the recipe so much that my beer was pretty much completely different to the original- but I think it was still similar in concept. My recipe for a 20L batch is as follows: OG:1.048 FG:1.007 IBU:22 ABV:5.38% 2080g Gladfield Pilsner 1245g Gladfield...

American Pale Ale Russian River Row 2 Hill 56 Clone

I brewed this a 2 months ago as I was looking for a go-to pale ale recipe. I generally try to use NZ hops in my brews seeing as they are grown just up the road from me, but I stuck to the Simcoe for this one. I`m also interested to see how Mosaic would go here. Anyways, the beer turned out...

    Belgian Tripel Tripel Karmeliet Clone

Well after a month in the bottle, I have to say this beer has turned out really well. I don`t have access to the original TK to do a side-by-side comparison, I can only go by my memory of the beer. I know the yeast I used is not the same, but I think the M31 has produced a really nice character...

    Belgian Tripel Tripel Karmeliet Clone

I brewed the updated recipe from jrfehon two days ago using 2xpkts Mangrove Jacks M31 hydrated ($6nzd per pkt opposed to $17 for white labs - and I already had one packet on hand). The only other change is I used Gladfield malts (suitable substitutes) and also the candy sugar I made myself (much...

    Mangrove Jacks M31 Tripel yeast

I brewed a Tripel 2 days ago using m31. The recipe is adapted from one on this website based on Tripel Karmeliet (one of my top 5 favourite beers). That recipe called for wlp500 but I used m31 (seeing as white labs yeast sets me back about $17nzd per packet opposed to $6 for MJ`s). The recipe is...
