    Screwdriver Ale

What kind of screw-driver was it? A phillips head adds more bittering than a flat head. Stainless steel adds more gravity (ABV) than chrome plated. A "Made in USA" is sweeter than "Made in China" A "Craftsman" makes a beer that is 100% guaranteed. All kidding aside - I wouldn't...

How good is your green beer?

I love tasting the wort, and drink almost every gravity sample. Overtime I'm starting to associate the various stages a beer is going through. I don't do a lot of large beers, but those I have, get much better in time. A couple I was going to pour out at 2 months, are a fav at 6.

Is Marris Otter worth the extra cost??

When you get a chance, brew Biermunchers ESB (Captain hooked on Bitters) with MO - it is incredible.

Brew Binge: 2 days, 4 recipes, 25 gallons

Finished up 21/2 hours ago. Today went better than yesterday although not perfect. But, I can't remember a "perfect" brew-day - when something doesn't go wrong, I'll make it up by doing something stupid. If I invested in additional MLT and a HLT I could run 2 batches in parallel. As it is...

Brew Binge: 2 days, 4 recipes, 25 gallons

Today is off to a better start. The hefeweisen is in the last 30 minutes of rest. If I can remember to start warming the liquor for the second brew while fly sparging the first I'll keep up with my projected schedule.

Brew Binge: 2 days, 4 recipes, 25 gallons

I've completed day one of my brew binge. The thought is to get a month or two's worth of brewing into a single week-end so that I can have more free week-ends goofing off with the family. Didn't go as smooth as expected. Friday night, drank some friends double bocks' and got totally E-ffed...

Airlock missing the lock & evaporation

I agree - but from my memory and tasting notes, it was really grapefruit taste and smell forward before. Much more subdued now. Also before I got the IPA aroma in the nose when popping the lid, not so tonight. As I said to the previous poster, I suspect I just lost some character with a beer...

Airlock missing the lock & evaporation

Beer was one month old at dry-hopping, and 6 weeks old this week-end. I remember "not" putting vodka in the airlock (if that makes sense). Temps were probably not consistent while I was gone, and would have fluctuated with the areas temperature swings, 70-83ish. Since it was such a strong...

Airlock missing the lock & evaporation

Hi, After I thought I was finally past extra stupid mistakes, I came home from vacation to find I failed to put some vodka in my air-lock. I'm dry hopping a 5.5 gallon batch of Biermuncher's tits up IPA, and just returned to find that I didn't put any vodka in the air lock. The beer was 1...

    Thermometer Hell

Thanks for the reply Evan. I'll order it this week-end, be here in time for my next brew in 2 weeks! Cheers

Did you get the probe? If so, what is the diameter?

    Raising temp after ferment

TY for the quick reply. Let me ask a different question - more to the point of what I'm looking for. Will the beer benefit from rest in the mid 70's? Obviously I'm not lagering, but by keeping the beer at the low end of the fermentation range, do I run the risk of diacetyl and benefit...

    Raising temp after ferment

For the first time since the summer temps hit us, I think I've controlled my fermentation temperatures. TY to all the folks that posted notes and plans on swamp coolers and the like. I've held cooler and wort temperatures to 63-67 for the entire fermentation time, and have reached my final...

My lesson, don't rush when making beer

Wow - If I include setup/flame on and break-down, clean up and put-away AG is a 6-7 hour task for me. Six hours when everything goes right (rarely), and 7 hours when I do something stupid like pull the chiller out too early (no stirring) or add PBM instead of 5.2 ph stabilizer to my mash water...

    Irish moss?

I used one whirlock tablet in Biermunchers Octoberfast - pulled a one week gravity yesterday and the beer is brilliantly clear. This beer used the highly flocculent S04 which means the yeast cleans up fast. I used one whilflock tablet in Biermunchers Tits Up IPA - pulled a one week gravity...

    Thermometer Hell

K, Based on all the feedback, I'm leaning towards the ThermoWorks – MTC Mini Handheld Thermocouple and a couple probes. I'm having a difficult time understanding if the 113-159 will fit in my MLT bulkhead fitting. It works with 1/8" thermometers - can you check yours and tell me what the...

What is the best pale ale malt:

The Country Malt Group It cost me $23 to ship a 55lb bag to my place. I think it shipped out of a NY ware-house. Wish I could get more feed-back. If its same-same, I think I might just start ordering the cheapest bag I can get. (Except I'll always use MO for english style beers).
