Buckwheat and Millet Pale Ale brewday recap

Hi everyone! Reading this thread with much interest because I recently tried brewing with millet. Not a gluten-free beer, it was a barley-millet combo. Got a biscuity flavor that wasn't particularly odd, but had a cottony drying sensation in the mouth. Was wondering whether that would be the...

Weird white growth - mold or something else?

Haha! True that! I'm sure though they were more skilled in their ancient craft than we ignorant archaeologists are!

Weird white growth - mold or something else?

UPDATE! So it's about two weeks after the previous picture. It seems a white noodle-like pellicle did form, but it is accompanied by a greyish growth. Can any of you confirm the white is indeed 'proper' pellicle and tell us what the grey is? Of course we will throw it away soon, but we felt...

Weird white growth - mold or something else?

Thanks guys! Some people over at the Milk The Funk Facebook group have been saying that even if this mysterious growth itself may not be harmful (for example if its pellicle), the fact that I had mold on the brew earlier means I should chuck it because toxins could have come in... Tasted fine...

Weird white growth - mold or something else?

That's very, very interesting! Posted same question in the Milk The Funk Facebook Group and most people there just tend to go with mold, so this is really helpful! Now I'm annoyed though that my microscope is in storage on the other side of the country... :( Will think about alternative ways of...

Weird white growth - mold or something else?

Hi! I'm currently doing a series of beer-archaeological experiments trying to recreate an ancient Armenian beer mentioned by the Greek author Xenophon. One of the things I'm is trying to figure out is why this beer is described as having bits of grain floating in it; an idea I'm testing is...

Spent Grain Mashed again for Yeast Starter

Hello! Hope you guys don't mind me reviving this very old thread, but I found it to be almost exactly what I was looking for and also raising some questions. I am currently doing a series of beer-archaeological experiments trying to recreate an ancient Armenian beer mentioned by the Greek...

    Brewing Classical Styles

Thank you! With the weekly translations, I will be able to offer a full inventory of the Greek and Roman references to beer, brewing, yeast, barrels, etc. so that they are easily available for anyone interested in this period of history. P.S. Those are great podcasts. Of course, I'm digging...

    Brewing Classical Styles

Thank you! Again, I truly appreciate your input and will mull over alternative names. I also have every intention to contribute substantively to any relevant threads/posts on this site. Unfortunately, there were no posts (to my knowledge) related to Greek and Roman beer in the past few months...

    Brewing Classical Styles

Thank you for your input. I will certainly take this into consideration and I am sorry you misinterpreted my intentions. The blog's title is both a tribute to the influential book and a reference to the Classical world (for which, there is only one adjective, "Classical"). It is also undeniable...

    Brewing Classical Styles

Hi Everyone, I am a Classical Archaeologist and homebrewer. Recently, I started a blog that merges my two passions, Brewing Classical Styles. My goal is to present all the Classical (i.e. Ancient Greek and Roman) references to beer in a format that is friendly and accessible to non-academics. I...
