Impressions of Spike 15gal Electric System

I would agree with an hour. That said, we're talking ~17gals of water for a 5 gal batch at a minimum. That's 12gal in the HLT (which covers the coil) and ~5 in the tun, which gets heated to strike temp by circulating back through the HERMS. After sparge I still have 3 - 4 gals in the HLT for...

Impressions of Spike 15gal Electric System

Wow, this is awesome. I wasn’t looking for a formal response from Spike, but your comments are most welcome and greatly appreciated – Thank you! Yep, I use the silicone tube trick. I also use a piece of butchers string to suspend the tube output just below the liquid. I run my pump wide...

Impressions of Spike 15gal Electric System

I have the Spike 15gal Electric System and now have nearly 30 brews through it - perhaps more. So far I only have a few complaints and one recommendation. I don’t know if Spike reps are in this forum or not, but,…….overall all, I absolutely love this system. The control panel is simple and...

    I Love Making Yeast Starters

Curious why you hate dry yeast. My limited access to a LCBS has caused me to appreciate dry yeast a bit more and to really like a few of them. I see no difference between US05 and WLP 001. K97 is now my go to for Blonde Ales and Kolsch Style's and Danstar Belle Saison is a solid performer...

    SS Brewtech Unitank Issues

This is very sad to hear. I have two of their Conicals w/FTS and love them. Considering getting a Uni, but your experience has me reconsidering /looking at alternatives. Everything brew related commands a PREMIUM prices. If I'm gonna drop that kind of coin I demand great customer service and...

    I Love Making Yeast Starters

Since my closest HomeBrew Store is now nearly 40mins away, I've been buying & brewing pretty much exclusively with dry yeast ordered from Amazon. However, for some brews I'll make the drive for fresh White Labs. Making a 4L starter of WLP500 for my annual New Years Day Belgian Triple Brew...

25th Brew on Electric Spike System

No looking back for sure. Brew day goes so much smoother, no more propane bottles and temps come up much quicker. Clean up is easier, but still not buying into the whole CIP thing. Kettles still need scrubbed, elements need cleaned and sight glass tubes need removed and cleaned once in a...

    Cornelius keg for secondary

I routinely use my corny's for "secondary", although there is no fermentation going on. My beer is finished and I use the corny's to clear, age, etc. If I don't have any room in my keezer, or if I need to free up a fermenter, into a corny it goes if it's finished. I clear with gelatin so I...

Super Saison - Fast Fermentation WOW!!

I made a Saison 10 days ago. BeerSmith said it would come in at 1.060OG, but it came in at 1.070. My efficiency is through the roof with my new Spike System, but that's a different story. Anyhow, I made a 3L starter with WLP565 and pitched it (decanted) into the WELL aerated wort and let it...

    Keezer Died

My neighbor suggested the start up relay. We disconnected the keezer from the Johnson Controller and plugged it directly into the wall. Every 20sec's or so you would hear a click - the relay trying to work. I just looked up the replacement process on Youtube and saw the Supco.

    Keezer Died

Around a month ago I traveled to Washington DC for business. When I got home I went to pour a pint from my Keezer and the beer came shooting out of the tap - I also noticed it was warm. Bottom line up front, my Keezer died!! No time for another Keezer build and most importantly,... loose all...

    Whirpooling with a plate chiller

Been using a Blickman Therminator plate chiller for a couple years now. I whirlpool my hot wort for 15mins, let it rest for 15mins and then put my plate chiller in line and transfer to my fermenter. I think the trube collects/cones better in the center on a hot whirlpool, I've never had a clog...

    Yeast Starter Questions!

You will be fine. Not impossible, but difficult to over pitch as a homebrewer. I routinely overbuild my starters to ensure good fermentation
