    Bazooka/Hop Stopper/Hop Sack/etc.

I've been using a 5 gallon paint strainer with no problems for a while now. If you have a good rolling boil, you should get good utilization if they are submerged.

    temperature controller questions

Another Ranco user that is happy. Yeah, once fermentation subsides you'll have to adjust the controller, but who doesn't check their beer during fermentation often?

    Wyeast 1214

Same thing just happened with my Wyeast 1214 the other day. Only one broke and the package didn't swell like it usually does. However, I made a starter so it didn't matter. I don't remember having 2 packs together in my Wyeast before. It was fresh yeast, April 7, so I know it wasn't a yeast problem.

    Lancaster PA Club

Didn't see you Mike! Place was packed as usual for this event and the ESB was spot on(kicked first, go figure!). These things are growing and getting nuts. When I walked in at 5:30pm, it smelled like BO and was hot as hell. Only a few club members where there.

bought a bunch of beers today here is a pic of what i got

Yeah, that Ballast Point Big Eye rocks!! Our HBC got a keg of it for our annual picnic...wow, it was phenominal(also, had it on cask!!). As far as those DFH 60 and 90 Minutes....I would mix them to get a 75, brings out the best in both and is a better beer, IMO.

    Bad brew day

    OMG...that is too funny!!:p

    Normal or abnormal? (pictures)

I wouldn't have racked that...it still fermenting! That's krausen and that tells you everything is going fine. Did you check gravity? Racking to secondary is when your fermentation is winding down. Those pics tell me that your not winding down yet.

    First Batch!

Congrats on your first brew!:mug: As far as the vodka/water getting sucked in, don't worry about it. If anything it will give your brew a little kick, but probably not much.

    Calibrating a digital thermometer

Anyone have one of these digital thermometers...Digital Thermometer w/Probe :: Midwest Supplies Homebrewing and Winemaking Supplies. It's way off and I can't find any info on the net where it says how to calibrate it.

T.O.: Should he stay or should he go?

Alright Cowboys fans, crawl out from under your rock like me and give me your thoughts. He's a cancer in the locker room, but he's a talent we can't replace. So, what do we do? Remember the salary cap hit: If he plays - $8.995 million. If he doesn’t - $9.675 million. So, what do you do? Oh BTW...

I hate Rachel Ray, do you?

Maybe I'm a lone voice here...but she's smoking in my book. Yeah, she's a twinkie from being fat, but she'll sure give you a meal that's tasty and I bet she does wonders in bed. I like a little meat on the bones and she just puts me in a trance on those cooking shows. I bet she digs a good...

    Slushy yeast in smack pack

Follow-up...I smacked my pack yesterday and I have some swelling, about 1/2 the normal size. I would imagine some are alive and some dead. I'm a little concerned if the dead yeast will give off some off flavors if they are revived. However, I think I'll make a starter tonight and still run to...

    Slushy yeast in smack pack

So I ordered my ingredients from Midwest last week when it was 40 degrees. Little did I know that this freeze was on the way for this week. So I receive my ingredients today and take the yeast (Wyeast 1214 Smack Pack) out of the box and it's slushy inside....not frozen, but slushy. So I smack...

    Sediment in Bell's Amber Ale?

....and they bottle condition which a lot do not. If you really want to see some stuff floating in your beer, grab a bottle of Smuttynose IPA....tons of floaties.

    Lager Yeast Starter Help

I use the 100 grams per 1L. I would weigh things out instead of using cups. As far as temp, I like it to get as cold as possible to have the yeast drop out. At 50, the yeast may fall a little, but probably not as fast. I've never done it at 50 so I'm just speculating. If you find it does fall...

    Lager Yeast Starter Help

Swirl the vessel and if it foams your probably OK. That does seem like a small starter for a lager though. Do you plan on stepping it up? I would step it a few times to get to 3-4 Liters, put in fridge the night before, then get it to 50 before pitching, and decant.

    Totals for the year folks

1971-2007.....0 gallons 2008............50 gallons 2009............???????? Started back in February with my first ever brew after buying a starter kit from NB. Since then, have ditched stovetop boiling and most of the kit and have aquired lots of equipment. Even stopped bottling and have...
