Using a (1) Gallon Batch as a Starter

Okay. One more question (sorry this is new information for me) - I plugged in what a gallon starter would produce for yeast and it came up with 650-700 billion cells. My target pitch rate is around 150-175 billion. Should I only pitch 1/3 of what's left over from my one gallon batch? I don't...

Using a (1) Gallon Batch as a Starter

So, do I need to wash the yeast, or can I just swirl everything at the bottom and re-pitch?

Sanitation when adding gelatin to kegged beer

So, if you hit it with Starsan before, can you still nuke it? I don't know how Starsan handles heat.

Sanitation when adding gelatin to kegged beer

Hey everyone, So, I've always been told anything that touches the beer after boiling needs to be sanitized. For some reason, however, when it comes to adding gelatin to clear kegged beer, the same rules aren't specified from what I've found. This is the process I've seen the most: 1 tsp...

Using a (1) Gallon Batch as a Starter

Hey Everyone, So, I want to proof out my honey ale recipe with a 1 gallon batch. I figure at 1.045 OG, just a simple packet of Wyeast 1056 will be sufficient; no starter. However, I'd like to use the resulting yeast for a 3 gallon batch of an IPA at roughly 1.055 OG. My thought is to...

Pitch new wort onto yeast cake

Hey Everyone, I know there's a lot of discussion on this subject, but I have just a quick question. I currently have a brown ale (OG 1.056) fermenting. When it's done, I'd like to rack it to a keg and immediately pour back in a red ale with an OG of 1.055. IBU's are about the same for both...

    Use this carboy?

I've definitely fermented with these in the last 12 months and was quite happy with the ales that came out. While I do believe these are scratches, I am not confident enough to say they are not stress cracks - certainly could be. They are both marked on the bottom "1925" and hold just under 5...

    Use this carboy?

Hey everyone, I have two old carboys (like 1920 old) and each one of them has scratches on the neck, on the inside. The scratches are from a carboy brush being used with Oxiclean Free. Please let me know your thoughts on keeping this carboy or discarding it. Thanks!!
