I do something similar, but i use a mylar balloon. I have found a few turns of electrical tape seals it to the tube.

My local welding shop exchanges tanks, If you have out of certification tank they charge you about $15 for the re cert fee... as well as the charge for the filled tank... You still come out ahead from buying a new tank !
