Hey dude, if you have any of the sultanas left, check the ingredients. Many of them contain vegetable oil, it stops them sticking together and makes them look more appealing and shiney. It doesn't do anything to your wine, but I've also found some of my equipment to be a bit greasy.

I'd definitely give it a go! My Grandfather passed away in 2010, and had left several demijohns full of wine. One of which was a demijohn of mead from 2003! It was amazing! Like you had, some of his wine was vinegar, but some of it was amazing!
