Wine maker giving beer a try

I've made many wines and now want to give beer a try. I bought a kit thinking it would be easier for my first try. After reading the instructions, (which I will have to read again, seems kinda confusing) I realized that it says I should have put the hops in the freezer when I received it. I...

    Started fermenting again in bottles

Just wanted to give an update. I let it sit for about three weeks. I went back to it last week to see if I could save it. The SG hadn't changed at all and the air lock had no movement at all. I decided to add a little potassium metabisulfite and potassium sorbate since I did not do it earlier. I...

    Started fermenting again in bottles

Nope, no date of any kind on the package. Just a mfg number. I'm sure with that number I could call MFG and get date of packaging. But with no dates at all it does make me wonder if there is a "best by" period of time with this stuff. Yooper, being that this is the first time I have had a...

    Started fermenting again in bottles

I found a few other post about this but none that really answered my question. I made a strawberry kit wine. Just wanted a quick batch of wine. Fermented to Dry (0.996). Back sweetened with about 17oz wine conditioner and also added 4oz of strawberry extract just to bump the flavor. Then...

    foamed out of airlock

Okay, so from now on i'll probably just start with a blow off tube instead of an airlock just incase. The beer will be transfered to a clean carboy in about 5 days just to get it off all the droppings so it should be fine. But the wine will probably go another two months before I do anything...

    foamed out of airlock

    foamed out of airlock

I started a 5 gal wine and a 5 gal beer yesterday. Overnight they both foamed out out of the airlock, Luckily the bench I use has a slight lip around it and stopped it from going everywhere. I replaced the airlock this morning with a tube going into a half full gallon jug and letting it foam out...

How long to keep in bulk?

Now see, I know what campden is and what sorbate is but didnt know to add them both. I've been useing one or the other but never both. SO, when back sweetening, I should be using the recomended amounts of campden tablets, and sorbate. good to know.

How long to keep in bulk?

Starting S.G. was 1.085 , I know I need to be a little more patient but I was wanting to free up the carboy for the next batch. I went ahead and added a little apple juice with a bit of sugar syrup to sweeten and bottled. I'll let it bottle age for awhile and see how it is. Have a batch of Plum...

How long to keep in bulk?

I have a simple Apple juice wine I’m doing right now. Every thing is going as planned but the recipe calls for it to stay in the carboy for another 3 weeks. I transferred to the second carboy after 30 days with a S.G. of 0.992. Its been in the second carboy 5 weeks now and its still at 0.992...

    Newbie question about rebottling

I did learn alot with this batch. Main thing being, just becouse I dont like it, dont mean it isn't good. I'm not happy with it, but after having a few others try it, some said it was okay, some said it was great. Everyone has a different taste for wines. Got 19 bottles back on the shelf. Had...

    Newbie question about rebottling

Okay, so after seeing all the responces, and me being an idiot, I decided to go ahead and sweeten and rebottle. I added a little bit of the same strawberry concentrate I used to make the wine to a bottle and made it taste alot better than it was. So I multiplied that measurement by 23 (since I...

    WHY are you making wine?

I just started last year with wine kits. Just want to see what all it involved and If we could save money over just buying wine. Well, I have my 5th & 6th kit fermenting now. ( Hope it hurries, I'm out of wine) I've found a few vinyards near me with different types of grapes and berries so this...

    Newbie question about rebottling

Thanks Yooper, I was kinda thinking about the same thing, I just hate to think I have 24 bottles I have to sweeten everytime I open one. But, I guess thats better than throwing it all out

    Newbie question about rebottling

I have a strawberry kit wine that I made exactly as instructions said and bottled even tho I didnt like it. Instructions said to bottle and let age at least 3 months then drink. Well, three months later I still dont like it. But playing with the bottle I opened I found I can make it better with...
