    Fermenter Chiller on the Cheap

With no insulation and vinyl tubing as my "chiller coil" I was able to get down to 56F. If you are using a SS coil inside the fermenter and have some insulation, I think you could do it. Mike

    CO2 Hop Extract

According to the product info, it sounds like 1 ml =10 ibu in 5 gallons. If I concentrate that onto a few hundred ml, wouldn't that make my hop tea super concentrated with ibu's, or am I missing something with the math? Thanks! Mike

    CO2 Hop Extract

The website says that One-milliliter yields around 10 IBUs in 5 gallons of 1.050 wort when boiled for 60 minutes. I figured if I were to boil 150 ml of water with 1.5 ml of extract, it should get me to around 20 IBU's and shouldn't dilute the beer much at all. You bring up a great point though...

    Fermenter Chiller on the Cheap

I got a Countertop Ice maker from a neighbor for free, but looking at Amazon, you can get one for about $90. I also got a submersible fountain pump from another neighbor for free, but those are around $10 on Amazon. I bought a few John Guest push to connect fittings and some 3/8 tubing from...

    CO2 Hop Extract

I brewed a cream ale recipe last weekend, and I misread the recipe and forgot the 60 min bittering hop addition. The recipe only called for 20 IBU's anyways, and because I missed the 60 min addition I will be more like 6 IBU's. Since it's a Cream Ale, it's not supposed to be very bitter in the...

    Yeast Question

Thanks so much for all of your replies. Archthered, your post makes complete sense when I look at it in those terms. I did go with the starter on the stir plate for probably closer to 18 hours because I already had it started before I read the post about shaken not stirred. If this ever happens...

    Yeast Question

At the moment I have the starter going on a stir plate, I just don't know how comfortable I am letting the wort sit in the fermenter for basically ~36 hours with no yeast...

    Yeast Question

My yeast was supposed to arrive yesterday which is when I brewed. It did not arrive until today and Beersmith called for a 1.3 liter starter. After brewing I transferred the wort into a well sanitized/sealed fermenter so there SHOULDN'T Be any contamination. That being said, should I build the...

    Refractometer reading

Just curious... What is the proper way to take a sample for my refractometer during the boil? I noticed that I get a different reading if I pull the sample with an eye dropper vs letting it drip off the stir spoon vs dipping the head of the refractometer into the boiling wort. I don't think...

    Burner not shutting off

Do you have a recommendation for a good quality SSR? I think I may just replace it and buy some thermal paste to be sure about it. I think the last one was 10 to $15 on Amazon and I think it might not have come with paste and I didn't have any so I rolled the dice.

    Burner not shutting off

Great! Basically, the SSR is mounted in the top of the control box and the heat sink is outside the box. I do not have a fan for the control box, and I can't remember, but there may not be any thermal paste between the heat sink and SSR come to think of it... I'm guessing that might be a good...

    Burner not shutting off

Sorry, I will answer what I can now and answer the rest later tonight or tomorrow along with uploading pictures and diagram. I forgot one very important detail. The system will heat at 100% power and keep heating past my set point. The part I forgot to add was that if I flip the burner switch on...

    Burner not shutting off

I'm running a 220 volt water heater element connected to an Aubur ezboil PID. When I turn the system on, the temp shoots right past my set value and doesn't shut off. The odd part is, if I wait until the actual temperature is within 5 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit of the set value (or I overshoot...

    Efficiency and volume question

Lol I love a good merlot. I've been considering buying a pH meter soon are the $20 ones I see on Amazon worth it, or do I need to drop some real cash for a expensive one? The strips do nothing for me I'm color blind and can't decifer them very well.

    Efficiency and volume question

Thanks a lot! It all makes sense but I've always heard that if you sparge below 1.010 you risk extracting tannins. It sounds like you are saying it's ok? I mean .. Even if I extract tannins in the last 3/4 gallons, will it effect overall flavor in a noticeable way? Appreciate the help on this...

    Efficiency and volume question

I've recently added a a grain mill to my equipment and I just brewed my first batch using it. Everything went smoothly, but I got some numbers that I was not expecting and I don't exactly know why or how to adjust beersmith to account for it in the future. My target boil volume/gravity was...

    Fermenting under pressure/head space

I'm planning on stepping up from buckets to a conical, and I've read about the fermentasaraus Gen 2 which sounds amazing, especially for the price! I typically brew 5 gallon batches but occasionally will brew a 10 gallon batch. I was originally looking into 14 gallon conicals so I could do...

    Mash gravity

I'm color blind, so doing the iodine test usually requires me to ask my wife or kids if conversion is complete. Normally I brew when no one's home, so I just mash extra long to ensure that it's done. During my last Brew, I got to thinking... shouldn't specific gravity keep rising until mash...
