Cooling Ferm Temp Down After 18 Hours

That's what I figured. I'll set to 70 wort temp for a few hours then bump it down to 66. Thanks!

Cooling Ferm Temp Down After 18 Hours

Just brewed a SMaSH IPA yesterday. Wort went into the fermenter at 3:15 CST, but my temp controlled fermenter wasn't working so I had to put it in a closet with an ambient around 72F. My fermenter is now working. So should I go ahead an switch it over to the fermenter and cool it down to mid...

    Make IPA Clear Again

Don't like Hazy IPAs? Then don't drink them! I love hazy IPAs, but I also still love clear ones. To me clarity and staying true-to-style isn't a top priority when I drink or brew beer. Obviously that would matter if I was entering competitions, but I'm not.

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Brewing a pineapple wheat this weekend for a birthday party in a couple weeks, hopefully I can get it done!

Igloo Ice Cube SS Braid/CPVC MT Build

I'm assuming as long as I have positive head at my manifold and it doesn't crush under the grain then I'll maintain the siphon. I didn't have any problems on the first go around. Yes I batch sparged 2x with full drains both times. I didn't test the lid before adding the insulation, but I had...

Igloo Ice Cube SS Braid/CPVC MT Build

They're similar but a bit stiffer than nylon. I'm betting they do get a bit compressed under the grain but I had good drainage the other day, granted that was with 14lbs. I guess we'll see how it does on bigger grain bills. I'm thinking I can insert a couple of SS springs or small lengths of...

Igloo Ice Cube SS Braid/CPVC MT Build

Just got back into brewing and did my first AG batch last weekend. I used my newly converted Igloo Ice Cube converted MT and wanted to share the project here in case someone has this cooler and was looking for ideas like I was. Hit 84% efficiency on the first go around, so I'd call it a success...

    Location for temp sensor

[Edit] I misread your post, I assumed you were talking about a refrigerator instead of just a carboy with fermwrap I keep my temp sensor in a gallon jug of water in the fermenter. It acts as a thermal mass similar to the beer, so the compressor doesn't cycle on/off as frequently. I don't have...

This is going to be another expensive hobby

Don't feel like you HAVE to sit on your money and go in for the best at first. Sure, if you're upgrading later on that's probably good practice, but if you get a decent starter kit to get your feet wet you'll use most of that equipment even when you start upgrading your system in the future...

Temperature Sensor Location in Fermentation Chamber

You're right about glass being more conductive, but even with your estimates of thickness the glass carboy is still more conductive. If you assume the same surface area and temperature gradient the glass carboy would be about twice as conductive as the bucket. So if you're looking for a faster...

How to remove alcohol from beer

You forgot a step... 3. Repeat

What are you doing instead of brewing this weekend?

Working at a local brewery and cutting the tops off a couple kegs

Temperature Sensor Location in Fermentation Chamber

I just have mine stuck through the lid of a gallon jug filled with water. This reduces the number of cooling cycles on my fridge, and I don't have to mess around with drilling stoppers or taping it to the side of carboys etc. I stay within my ferm temps with a reasonable amount of accuracy. I...

Recipe Suggestions for NZ Waimea Hops

A reputable brewery down here around Houston (Lone Pint) recently brewed a single hop using Waimea with two row and Munich. It turned out excellent.

    A year of SMaSH

I haven't brewed a SMaSH yet myself, but a local brewery here in Houston called Lone Pint Brewery is well known for their Yellow Rose SMaSH. They use german pilsner with mosaic and it's phenomenal. I think the pilsner malt lends just enough maltiness to give it body, but it leaves a lot of room...
