    Cheap try at cider

Update. Should have only used about half a cinnamon stick or none. I used 2. The taste is overpowering. Also I didn't test it but alcohol content seems low.

    Ferment didn't start

Still plenty of bubbles on top, but I haven't seen any bubbling or burping in blow off jug for a few days now. It's been about 10 days, safe to move to secondary even though still bubbles on top?

    Ferment didn't start

It has now started. I checked it this morning, the cover is bulging. (I have an airline into a jug of sanitizer). I couldn't resist, I cracked the cover and had a look, lots of krausen. I did wrap it in blankets yesterday, this brought it up a degree or 2 Celsius. I wonder if this was the...

    Ferment didn't start

It was a Nottingham yeast. Not exactly sure of strain. I popped the cover a couple times. Very few bubbles, no krausen. LHBS did have beer yeast. Should I wait another day? This evening will be 48 hrs. If I do add more yeast, what should my temps be of both wort and hydrated yeast?

    Ferment didn't start

Added yeast about 36 hours ago to a steeping/extract kit, still nothing. not sure if temp is wrong or what, the room is the same temp, (around 19C) that I have made several other kits in. Perhaps the yeast was bad. We only have a wine shop in town, so my question is can I use wine yeast? If...

    Extract kit

Thanks for replies. I was leaning towards dry hopping after fermentation. I have tried kits with steeping grains, and agree they are much better. I don't have much selection around here as my local shop is mainly a wine shop with just a few cans of extract. As far as switching yeasts, would...

    Extract kit

Going to put on an extract kit. Just the Cooper's type can, add water, brew enhancer and yeast. No boiling with this kit. Probably do an ale or a pilsner ( although I find they all pretty much taste the same). With that being said I have an oz of citra pellet hops and an oz of cascade...

    Cheap try at cider

Thanks. For the batch I have on now, which is about 3 litres of store bought cider, I intend to moe it to a secondary and add a couple cinnamon sticks. I will let it sit for a week or two then bottle. I will prime with prob 9-10 table spoons of sugar. Any other suggestions?

    Cheap try at cider

Sanitized container and added 3 litres of Apple juice. I then added about a cup of corn sugar. I warmed about 2 cups of water to 40 degrees Celsius and stirred in yeast and left it for about 15 mins. After stirring up juice and sugar I added the yeast and put cover on. I left it for about 3...

    Cheap try at cider

So I tried again, without the cinnamon. Apple juice, some dextrose and wine yeast. Same result, did not ferment. Could the container stop fermentation? It was about a 1 gallon plastic container from the dollar store, the type used to put a box of cereal in. Needless to say it was dumped. I...

    Cheap try at cider

I ended up dumping it, I was also suspecting it may have been the cinnamon. I checked label on juice, it did not label anything about preservatives. I just tried it again, this time without the cinnamon sticks. If I decide I want cinnamon I may add it in the secondary. I'll find out in morning...

    Cheap try at cider

Not that I know of. I used the same juice in the first batch. That was my thought too.

    Cheap try at cider

In process of 2nd attempt. In primary I have 3 litres of store bought apple juice, about a cup of corn sugar and 2 cinnamon sticks ( I know the cinnamon is against advice I received). I pitched the yeast ( a wine yeast, not exactly sure of type, it started with an E I believe) and left it in a...

    Cheap try at cider

Racked today just into a growler and put it in the fridge. Tastes like crap. Was in the local brew shop and picked up some proper yeast to give it another try. Just going to try same type of store bought juice and thought maybe I'd try a couple cinnamon sticks for some added flavour. I also...

    Cheap try at cider

Thanks for all the info. It's been about 3-4 days now. Bubbling has stopped and haven't noticed any burps in airlock for awhile. Might leave it another day or two and stick it in fridge. Should I leave airlock on in fridge or put cap back on?

    Removing stuborn label glue

For stubborn plastic labels I use baking soda and a bit of cooking oil mixed together. Paint it on with a brush and let it sit awhile. Then some elbow grease and maybe a copper scrub. A lot of work yes, but only so many can be recycled until I run out.

    Cheap try at cider

Thanks for replies. It was just a cheap experiment, if it's decent I'll look into the proper ingredients. I knew it was wrong yeast, but it was what was in front of me. I was actually more curious as to the plain apple juice off the shelf working or not.

    Cheap try at cider

I was strolling through grocery store today and for some reason bread yeast caught my eye. I got the brain wave to add it to a 1.5 litre apple juice. Not Motts, but something similar. Label said no additives. So basically I came home, poured out a couple inches of juice, added about half a...

    Beer: A Game of Temperature

Quick question. My temperature for carbonation a bit low. If I stir up the bottle a bit and move it to a warmer spot, will it still carbonate? It's Benin in cool spot for about 7-10 days.

    First Partial Mash

So the can I would buy, like Coopers, is a condensed version of grains being mashed? I usually use beer enhancer when I brew a can, this would be the sugars? Is beer enhancer the same as, or doing the same job as dme?
