    Spike - Steam Condenser Lid

My house water pressure is like 45-50 PSI, while the Spike pump puts out 6 PSI, so running the condenser sprayer right off the tap gave a dramatically stronger stream. I bought an inline water pressure regulator (typically used for RVs), and am able to crank it all the way down to 0 PSI if I...

    Spike's upcoming eBIAB system

Same here. There were several emails about signing up for an update mailing list, and also a link on the website, but I think it's been removed now. I'm excited for the 10 gal basket, as I already have a kettle, and am using an induction burner instead of immersion. I'm really anxious to see...

Boil kettle condenser - no overhead ventilation needed

Hi all, I did another test today. 5 gallons of water, condenser lid on but sprayer off, heated to a boil. Then, I took off the lid, and..... it dropped, down to at least 203 before I stopped the test. Well, it looks like my burner isn't putting out enough heat to maintain a boil with the lid...

Question for Adcraft induction burner owners

No idea. I don't have the induction unit yet, so I don't know how much torque is required to turn the knob, but I can't imagine it's that much. I thought this would be an elegant way to gain full PID control over the unit without modifying it internally. I'm not completely against doing that...

Question for Adcraft induction burner owners

Not a bad idea! Thanks. Another idea I've been toying with is using a Raspberry Pi to control a servo motor attached to the power knob. Properly calibrated, this should be able to provide a fine level of control over the heat level, and even utilize a PID algorithm. However, it also seems like...

Question for Adcraft induction burner owners

I'm considering buying an Adcraft IND-C208V, and am wondering if it has a fan that runs when the unit is powered on. I'd like to control the burner using an external unit, but am worried that completely shutting off the power in between cycles may be harmful to it if it has a built in fan, as it...

Boil kettle condenser - no overhead ventilation needed

Thanks, yes I have the same experience with the temperature of the water coming out. Not sure exactly what to think there, but I've read from other people in here that it should be quite hot unless the sprayer is putting out more water than strictly necessary for condensing, which is what we...

Boil kettle condenser - no overhead ventilation needed

No problem at all, I appreciate you helping to investigate my ideas and assumptions. I'm familiar with what happened with Larry, but if I remember right, this was because he had a prototype unit where the angle of the lateral arm on the condenser was not steep enough (something like ~1* vs. 3*)...

Boil kettle condenser - no overhead ventilation needed

Great points and questions. Thank you very much for your help. I will try to answer them below: 1) I've seen the BEER N BBQ video, and while I haven't seen evidence of water coming in through the condenser arm so far, I will do another test tonight where I measure the pre- and post-boil...

Boil kettle condenser - no overhead ventilation needed

Okay... I'm stumped, and am looking for help. I've made a video documenting this behavior, which I think may be helpful to look at. It's only 1 minute and 47 seconds, with some sped-up parts to show the passing of time. You can find it at , and will see the following: 1) An overview of the...

Boil kettle condenser - no overhead ventilation needed

This is a good question. I will need to do another test to confirm the volumes. Thanks!

Boil kettle condenser - no overhead ventilation needed

Good points. I had the lid on the entire time, pre-boil and during. I've used this induction plate for brews in the past before I got the condenser lid, so I know it can handle it, even with the lid off. I was just thinking that the addition of cold influent water might have been overpowering it.

Boil kettle condenser - no overhead ventilation needed

Thanks for the feedback. It is good to hear other people's experiences, and how this doesn't line up with them. I'm not sure what to think now... The lateral arm does indeed have a downward slope, and it seems unlikely that water would be spraying up into it. But then again.... what else could...

Boil kettle condenser - no overhead ventilation needed

Huh.... Well I don't know what to say. Maybe water is dripping in through the lateral arm and lowering the temperature? It doesn't look like that, but it's hard to judge. I asked Spike for advice, so hopefully I'll get something straight from the source soon. In the meantime, though, when you...

Boil kettle condenser - no overhead ventilation needed

So I tried my Spike condenser lid today, and I have a few questions. Before turning on the spray water, the temperature was at 209*F, which is boiling temp at my elevation. After turning it on, it dropped to 199*F and stabilized there, without changing the heat input level. The effluent water...

Using magnets to hold recirculation tubing in place

True, but I've always felt uneasy about Locline. I know many people use it to great effect and with no difficulties, but I've tried hard to keep threads and other crevices out of my system, as well as unnecessary plastic. Yes... I know that this pursuit of purity or perfection with regards to...

Using magnets to hold recirculation tubing in place

Hi all, Rather than a float ball or something else to hold wort recirculation tubing in place, I've been thinking about using a pair of magnets - one affixed to the end of the tube, and the other on the outside of the kettle (since the SS in the kettle likely won't be magnetic enough). Has...

Boil kettle condenser - no overhead ventilation needed

I just got mine yesterday and haven't had a chance to test it yet, so I can't confirm how well it works first hand, but the reviews I've seen so far are very positive and suggest that it's definitely getting the job done. Also, the nozzle can be swapped for another one if you wish, as it has a...

    Spike - Steam Condenser Lid

I just got mine in the mail, and haven't had a chance to test it yet, but I wanted to share some pictures here that might be helpful. Here is the nozzle. It appears to be stainless steel and has a 1/4" MPT thread which screws into the water inlet tri-clamp fitting. To confirm the size and...
